Most actors are the same person every part.
Daniel Day Lewis and Gary Oldman are two that can become someone totally different in every roll. I agree. Whether an actor is typecast, or whether they lack depth, the result is the same. Bruce Willis is one who seemed typecast and having shallow abilities, but watching him in Death Becomes Her, and The Sixth Sense changed my mind quickly. I haven't watched Daniel Day Lewis in much, but Oldman is definitely a chameleon.
4 out of 5 Great Lakes prefer Michigan.

Robert Duvall. He's a genuine actor,..can assume many roles and play them convincingly.
He was Tom Hagan, the Consigliere of the Godfather. He was Augustus McRae, a Texas Ranger turned trail boss in Lonesome Dove, and Mac Sledge, a washed up country singer who reclaimed a simple way of life in the movie Tender Mercies. He won an Oscar for that role.
He's a pro.

They all start to play 'themselves' in every roll if they are in the game long enough i.e John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Gene Hackman, etc...
Leonardo Dicaprio acts, like him or not. Christian Bale as well. Same with Day-Lewis, Hardy, and Oldman already mentioned.
