Anybody notice hiring schit done has gone to schit in your area? Sure has around here. Simple jobs too. Tune up a chainsaw. Set up quickbooks on a computer. Don't even talk about pharmacies. Funny one happened a few weeks ago.

Bought a new attachment for the excavator last fall and when I went to try it for the first time this spring, it wouldn't latch right. Took some photos and sent them to the salesman and he says, "Ah hell, the pins are backwards! Bring it in, we'll turn em around for ya." I took it in and we all chuckled about it being a Friday build and while the salesman and I walked around the yard looking at the other toys the mechanic flipped em around. Got back to the job and sunuvabitch if one of 'em wasn't still bass akkwards. No big deal but illustrates my point.

People mean well for the most part, this isn't about that, but damn, incompetent, confused, whatever, I am having a damn hard time hiring things done. Is this brain fog left over from the China flu?

Seems like ever thing goin to crap in America for the last few years. Or maybe it's better where you are????

I keep telling the wife this place is dysfunctional as hell, we need to get outa here.

Some small stuff I'll bring it in or farm it out. Money won't go to a box store or company. Local only.

Seems like if it's not something simple, fix in 10 minutes or less, they just can't wrap their head around troubleshooting and systematically eliminating things one a time. When you tell them what you've learned about the problem, they ignore it and when you get it back it does exactly the same thing.

What really gets me is when I hire something done and end up holding their hand and loaning them tools.

Many here don't know what they are doing. Roofers that leave you with a leaking roof. Painters that do a poor job that has to be repainted.

Lotta people that couldn't hold a job, let alone be willing to work prior C19.
Are now in the workforce due to higher wages.
And they still meet thresholds for welfare and tax benefits.
And they know they are seen as " assets" now and do the minimal poorly at best for the maximum amount of time.
They have it figured out and pretty much see themselves as untouchable.

Poor service
Poor knowledge and abilities are accepted now by alot of employers because they know finding a replacement worker is a time consuming and frustrating process.
So they put up with the bullschit from these employees and pay feigned interest to customer complaints.
Employees have alot of employers held hostage basically.

And it ain't just young people either.
Lotsa old people who are well beyond their abilities they had in the past also are in the workforce now drawn back by higher wages.
Many of these types didn't work during their life either or nothing even similar to what they are now.

Employers looking for a breathing body.....

And alot of the things you have to put up with when interacting with these employees from 70 to 80 yrs old because they are out their in retail and service business now are pretty damn frustrating to a customer at times.

Young and dumb just grows to be old and dumb..

Not all older employees fall into that catagory above at all.

But their sure are alot more of em it seems now in the workforce than their was prior 2020/ C19....

All that was happening in our area before the chinese lung funk.

All entry level jobs at my employer were filled with temps. They'd go through 10 before one would stick and then later on they find out that one was stealing.

I try to know my limitations of skill, knowledge, and tools.

Looking to trim some trees. Small branches I can reach with the pole mounted chainsaw aren't an issue.

Anything higher? Call an arborist or just live with it.

When I was working, I hated the Brother-in-law specials I had to sort out and fix.

Most definitely agree.
But it has compounded since 2020 / C19 IMO.

I hear ya, I rarely hire anything out but with all the snow here I decided to hire someone to clear my drive. They quoted me 150-175 and actually showed up, did a decent job but not great. Then they send me an invoice for 325, WTF! They included a list of reasons for the price but the one reason they forgot was GREED. Haven't paid them yet phugg them they will have to wait awhile. Too bad there isn't any recourse for crooks that pull that s hit. I do know that they have lost a repeat customer over this BS.

Several weeks back I needed a 1 1/2'' wide L-shape bracket welded onto an old dual-sport motorcycle. I cut it out, bent it, had needle nose vise-grip to hold it in place, paint scraped off where I wanted it tacked-on.
Called a friend's grandson who 'welds' , explained what I needed and that it would take 5 minutes max, answer ok > $75. < No thanks. I told him his grandpa told me he would try and rob me. Wound up drilling it and used self tapping screws.
He could have made $30 in 5 minutes but that would interrupt his i-phone time.

Talked to an old friend a couple of years ago who had retired and turned his electrical company over to his two sons, age mid/upper 30's. They ran the company into the ground within a couple of years, constantly trying to charge ridiculous prices. Friend said they won't work an 8 hour day, make some spending money and go home.
One of them is now deceased, <oxy.

You're a fool if you pay them more than they quoted for the job. Paying them promotes them doing more.
Trades used to try that BS on me, NOPE here's your price in writing and that's what you're getting.

Most mobile services charge port to port - did this kid need to pack, load up his welder, driver over, tack and return? Time on that? 5 mins on site but getting there and back vice opportunity cost elsewhere?

At Wendy’s back in the day, they’d FIRE YOUR ASS on the first day if you put mustard on a Big Classic kaiser.

That makes more sense then. Got it.
