I have a working load for the 300 grain A-Frame using RL-15. Now I'd like to try RL-17.

I've already checked Gack, Alliant, & Swift, but no joy.

Any reference you can point me to is appreciated!

To wrap this (short) thread I got some feedback from one handloader already doing what I want.

His 2,300 fps MV (24" barrel) RL-17 / 300 gr. A-Frame ended up at 60 grains. So I figure anywhere's from 58 - 61 grains.

That is all.

Sounds reasonable to me, should be a manageable load if youre settling on 2300 fps. I've put a pile of 300 grain a-frames through moose n caribou 2300-2460 fps.

I can tell you recovery from recoil for shot number 2 or 3 was alot quicker at 2300 fps, than 2460 fps.

All my 300 grain Swift a-frames are loaded with 60 grains of rl-16.

Good to know. Thanks! I'll be saving that info.

My needs are somewhat narrow and specific. I've been culling Cape Buffalo cows in the thick bush where the average shot has been between 30 - 35 yards and shot angle is either head-on or a narrow quartering-to. It's rare to get a side-on shot.

Both the PH and Kevin Robertson, who I've been trading emails and a phone call or two have both said for those conditions and using the A-Frame to go up in weight and slow it down some. BTW, they both luv the 9.3 for that scenario.

Mucho thanks again.

64 grs of RL-17 under the 320gr Woodleigh PP gives 2400 fps, and not max. Rifle: Tikka 22.44" barrel. WLRM primer, Hor. brass.

Bob what did you end up getting the 250 and 270 grain bullets to run at. I remember you were doing some spicy loads there for a bit.

Experience is something you get, just after you needed it.
