Or (shudder) salmon patties. To complete the horror, make them with mackerel.

Halibut. Slavyanka loves salmon but I’m actually sick of it. Hard to buy halibut here.

Smoked, jar'd coho makes some really good salmon patties. That's one of my favorite ways to eat salmon.

Actually the reason halibut is so well-liked is the fact they do last so well on ice. If you see the Swedish boats in the SE AK power troll fleet you will see a gunny sack hanging in the rigging almost all the time. They hang their halibut for at least a week and keep them cool just by evaporative cooling. They cook them just like eveybody else, lots of variety, but the aged halibut is far better than fresh. I have proved repeatedly to many and cannot remember anyone trying it liking the fresh better... when they did not know up front which was which.

Nearly, in my mind, as wonderful as fresh Halibut!
Case in point - four friends and I "hired" a large vessel in Kodiak Alaska for a live aboard week of Salmon and Halibut fishing.
During the week we cooked both fresh Salmon and Halibut in every way possible way (including my favorite, barbecuing!).
And at the end of the week the five of us and the Captain all raved about BOTH the fresh Salmon and fresh Halibut we ate!
All of us were unable to come to a consensus as to which was "better".
Now and then I remember the fresh "Halibut cheeks" we barbecued, and ate - simply, SUBLIME!
Halibut by a whisker.

Laughing at the argument to authority using a charter boat driver from Kodiak as an Epicurean! Having been a charter Captain there for nearly three decades, running charters I do see why you would elevate us to near-Godly standards! But there are a good many here with lots of experience with the different salmon, halibut, and lots of other incredible fishes.

I cannot think of one that thinks of halibut as the be all, end all fish.

Living in northeast MT we obviously don't get fresh seafood of any kind but my wife and I still enjoy the frozen stuff.

I would have to say I prefer the woman's breaded and fried(olive oil) halibut over the sockeye I get from a buddy that works on a boat.

The sockeye runs about $15/lb and the last halibut I bought about a month ago was $32/lb.

The dogs go absolutely wild when I bring in a salmon filet off the grill, and they don't turn their nose away from the halibut either.

OK,

But I will say again, the only Halis I eat, I catch myself, for two reasons.

First reason is that they are a lot of fun to catch. The second reason is that I know how they were handled from the ocean to my diner plate.

I catch and eat the best Halibut on earth, what a beautiful planet. cool

Halibut. Most of the salmon we get here are those nasty Atlantic ones. They’re not fit for the dogs. Sockeye and Kings are pretty good tho!

You are eating Farmed Atlantic Salmon, not wild.

Farmed Atlantic Salmon is not fit for human consumption.

It is all good! Depends on the day. Today I'd go Sockeye the edge!

DO TELL where you get WILD Atlantics.

Friends don’t let friends eat any farmed seafood. Farmed seafood is the protein developed for Kalahari bushmen….😂

Aces, I have a dollar that says I can get you to love farm raised fish. If you care to accept that little wager, I’ll have a truck in Bellevue next Thursday with a delivery for you.

For me as having fished hard my whole life I would have to say yellow perch and steelhead are my favorites, in that order.

On a sample of one, I agree. And I am not accepting any more samples.

I went salmon fishing constantly in the 60s 70s, and 80s.

Now I eat Sockeye about once a week that my wife buys.
