Better to buy a rifle and have it cut to 20". I've had the carbines. 20" handles better. While your at it, have a pad installed and the trigger tweeked. The Williams FP works very well on that 20". I agree that the 20" barrel improved the balance when compared to the 18.5" barrel carbines. Also, it you use a receiver sight that allows you to remove the staff, you can install a Weaver base to use with a scope and if you equip the scope with QR rings you can remove it and install the peep with a sightline through the trough of the Weaver base. I have this set up on my Winchester 100s and find that it works well.

http://www.tgicreations.com/Kevin Aucoin knows his way around the 7600s. He's going to get my Whelen to cut, but he's close enough for me to.make the drive (probably 3 hours). I have had Kevin cut, recrown, flue cerakote, oversized safety, trigger job, at least 6 760/7600's. They turn out beautifully.... 18.5" is the carbine length. Kevin also installs a nice rubber O ring on all his rifles. Give him a call or message him on facebook. great guy!!!

Mines a Whelen. It’s got some recoil but nothing bad that I feel.

Did you find in a '06 these kick like the neighbors mule? I had one of the synthetic stocked ones in .270 Win for several years, and it kicked the snot out of me. It was an excellent shooter, but the comb caught me square in the cheekbone.

But you have to d&t 2 non-factory holes in the left side of the 760/7600 receiver to mount a Lyman, Redfield, or Williams FP. I ever understood why Remington never drilled, tapped, and plugged holes in the standard location and pattern for a receiver sight. I agree, but then Remington could never figure out how to get a recoil pad on the walnut stocked 760/7600s either not to mention sling studs. <eye roll>

I have a late 80's 7600 in .35 whelen that I had Nate at Hillbilly custom's cut to a 18.5 carbine. He cut the barrel, installed the front sight, target crown and worked over the trigger. Came out beautiful. I never used the rifle much but alway's take it out a couple of time's a season now. I have the William's wgrs but think I will be buying the Skinner. Karl

Glad you found one! It's a 308. Comes with 5 mags. Doesn't get no better. I think alot of others are cool to have, but the 308/30-06/270 are the common sense solid choices.

Would have gladly taken an '06 or even 270 but 308 was my preferred option. I'm excited to get it and play around with it. I wouldn't say I stole it but I think I got a pretty fair deal considering the current market and that there should be a fair amount of value in the extra magazines. I know it seems to have mixed reviews but I think I'm going to try out the Williams WGRS. I like that it is further back, closer to the eye than the skinner and they currently have it available as a combo with a fiber optic front sight. After I get some time to assess how I feel about it I will likely have the barrel cut down.

It's a 308. Comes with 5 mags. Those mags are getting spendy these days. I see them for up to $100 for reg 308/3006 mags. One guy was offering 35Remington mags for $150.

I was figuring about $50/each conservatively so if I subtract $200 from what I paid for the 4 extras then I got a pretty good deal. If $100/each then I'm almost making money!😆

Anyone have an opinion on these uncle Mike's pump mounted sling studs? I've never really been a fan of the barrel bands, though this might be a better option.

No opinion but I’m watching. Most of mine are without slings.

They work just fine, although mine are probably all from the 60-80s. No idea on the quality today. If you're looking for a Williams top mount I can probably help you out too. Drop me a PM. I've discovered with my old eyes a reflex pistol red or green dot on a the scope rail is much easier to see and quicker IMO then the peep. It doesn't look as classy but it's a good option for those of us that don't want a scope but can't see the front bead.
They say everything happens for a reason. For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.
