I'm looking into an old bolt action milsurp rifle. It appears to be 6.5 x 53mmR ammo. The rifle says 'Steyr' on it, bolt action, carbine length. That's pretty much all I know about it (don't have it in hand or have informative pictures). What's kind of odd is that the wooden handguard on top goes all the way almost to the front sight, but the lower stock leaves the underside of the front half of the barrel exposed.

The Dutch gov't contracted with Steyr to build them initially, then took it up themselves at their Hembrug arsenal. Very neat guns, extremely well made. Always wanted one, but never did. Cartridge essentially the 6.5x54 Mannlicher-Schoenauer cartridge but with a rim.

It's a straight pull action? I like the old Steyr straight pull action rifles. I've kicked my ass a bunch of times for not buying one of the M95 carbines in 8x56r.

No, Dutch M1895 is a turn bolt.

I always thought that a Dutch 6.5 would make a cool looking custom rifle. I have never seen a custom, and seldom if ever see a factory rifle. Probably wouldnt be able to rebarrel it to many other cartridges

A friend is doing a full custom rifle, soup-to-nuts, on a Dutch Mannlicher in the style of a a London's Best stalking rifle. It's a looker. (Top English firms sometimes used these rifles as the basis for stalking rifles back at the turn of the last century. Note that thread on another forum I mentioned is titled "New project starting" by LRF.

RTI has them in stock pretty often, but buying from a bulk lot of milsurps sight unseen can be a real crapshoot.

Bubba may have 'sporterized' the lower front half of the stock. Yes, turn bolt, not straight pull.

Here’s an example of one done as a custom. While it is not marked by the maker, it is identical to one I found online that was identified as a W.R. Pape rifle. Had to have one after reading a Ross Seyfried article on them. It’s been a fun rifle. Carried it a few time caribou hunting but never found a cooperative caribou when I had it with me.

Grouseman - that is one of the rifles I used in the postal match started by gnoahhh in this forum subthread. I have two of these rifles one is an original carbine (bicycle carbine) and the other is a custom build supposedly for a German officer? (pictures below). I really like the round/rifle and as gnoahhh said it’s the ballistic twin of the 6.5X54 just with a rim. Ammo isn’t easy to find and most just make brass from the .303 British. The custom sporter I have shoots most bullets well and really likes the Hornady 129 grain bullets the military carbine will only shoot the 160 grain Hornady RN.

If I'm not mistaken, Charles Sheldon had one as his only rifle and was the first to get a grand slam on sheep. Great looking rifles fellows!
