About 2 hours NNE of Houston. Looks like my son is leaving Michigan's U.P. for TX. Talk about two weather extremes! Personally, give me the U.P. Anybody familiar with that area of Texas?

The Evans Brothers Gun Range in Huntington is near there. Decent shooting range.

Humid AF, he won't need his heavy winter gear from the U.P.

There are a couple national forests just outside of town. How's the deer hunting? Are there many hogs in the area?

You’ll have hogs aplenty. Deer hunting is good butTexas is expensive to get a lease. Fishing’s good. Misquotes are as big as buzzards.

I live 25 miles north outside Nacogdoches. Worked the last 3 years in Lufkin.

Yes it’s humid and lots of pine trees. We call it the being behind Pine Curtain instead of the iron curtain… East Texas is special, kind of a combination of TX and LA here. Lots of public land here compared to the rest of TX. Lots of fishing, lots of hogs and decent deer hunting. A stray eastern turkey too.

Perfect distance from Houston or Dallas but still not bad to get what ya need from a big city. Decent BBQ, plenty of mexican food and lots of catfish.

Weather will be the only real difference/challenge since were pretty rural and good people here like country people in the north as long as you’re polite everyone is else is.

Best way i can describe E TX is stepping back in time about 30-40 years. Be glad to talk to him if he wants. Pm me and I’ll send you my phone number.

Oh yeah, and the skeeters… they’re our national bird.

Lufkin has a Sam’s, Academy and a decent HEB grocery store. Wife grew up in Nacogdoches About 20 minutes North. I wouldn’t mind living around Lufkin. We hunt her parents farm and I just leased the 400 acres next door. Deer and hogs galore.

East Texas is covered up with hogs. It’s pretty out there for sure.

I think your son is crazy leaving the UP for there, and I predict he will be back soon.
