I'd sell it and buy a 257 Weatherby.

The 338 seemed like a reasonable choice for elk, since I read how tough they were. I was convinced that any hunting cartridge had to have a belt and if it didn’t have 3500 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle, it wasn’t suitable for elk-sized game. My 7mm Rem Mag was relegated to deer-sized game since it just didn’t have the juice.

I’m older now and realize that most animals don’t need so much killing. Experience has shown that milder cartridges are easier to shoot and critters die just as quick. My “big” rifle has been a 30-06.

So, what to do with the 338? Keep it? I’m not hurting for options, so it doesn’t hurt to have it. Sell it to someone who “needs” it? Maybe rebarrel? Always wanted a 257 Weatherby. Its an M70 Classic Stainless, so not a lot of room in the box.

Describe the rifle? Maybe some changes to it could get it back in your good graces, haha… new stock, scope, barrel length…. A .338 is a great Roosevelt rifle if it’s set up right. Mine (M700 XCR) had a 26” barrel, but I had it shortened to 23”. Put it in a B&C Alaskan stock. With a 3-9 Conquest in Talley’s it’s a great carry. I don’t load it hot anymore, it’s like a 338-06 plus P, so the recoil isn’t bad. You could load it down to 338 Fed levels and go blacktail hunting in the thick stuff, but not bloodshot a bunch of meat. Could be a great rig, IF the rifle itself is set up for that kind of hunting.

If you’ve got it set up as a big long cannon then yes I can see being “over it”. smile

I used 243, 25/06, 270, 308, then got into moose and went with a 375 H&H.

Always wanted a 338 and ended up with two both 338 win mag, one a Remington 700 and a M77 tang safety Ruger, both from auctions.

So me I just keep them all and buy another, lot of fun collecting and have I am sure over 60 rifles, to enjoy.

Ha, its basically what you describe, except in Winchester form. It’s a factory M70 Classic Stainless with the barrel cut from 26 to 23 inches and a 2.5-8x Leupold (which has held zero). I have a new Bansner stock for it, but I haven’t gotten around to finishing the stock and bedding it.

I, too, have used it mostly as a western WA elk rifle. Shots are usually close and never stretch much more than 300 yards. I’ve pretty much only used 250gr partitions loaded to around 2700 fps. Definitely not a plinker.

If you reload, turn it into a 30-30, 308, 30-06 or not. Since turning into an old fart, I download almost all of my guns for plinking now. Cast bullet load data with jacketed bullets keep me at the range. Luckily I have enough components on hand to keep shooting. 4198,5744,2400 and now Shooters World Heavy Pistol. I Shoot 180 AccuBonds or 200. Still enjoy shooting the gun (Old Weatherby Vanguard)

If you reload, load it down.

If you don't reload, let it go to someone that HAS to have it.

I recently loaded a buddy's 300WSM, down to 308 levels. He likes his rifle again.

The recoil doesn’t bother. It’s more that I’ve realized critters don’t require that much killing. I used to think a 7mm Rem Mag was a deer rifle and NEEDED a 338 for elk. I hardly use either one now. I’ve managed to kill deer and elk cleanly with lesser calibers over the years and just haven’t bothered using anything this big. Again, it doesn’t hurt to have it though.

I will say that I don't mind using larger calibers on bad weather days when you need stuff to go down quickly or at least leave a lot of leakage. I like .30/.33/.35cals on those nasty days.
