Hey folks, I have a boatload of coyotes around a nearby friends place. The first time calling (end of May) I used a whitetail fawn tape in a Johnny Walker electronic call. A coyote came screaming right in to it and bought the farm. Since then, several uses of that tape has produced nothing.

Tried a coyote pup distress tape the other night and the coyotes went absolutely bonkers. I'm not exagerating that there were at least 8 coyotes in 3 different directions going nuts, BUT they wouldn't come in. We saw one at 400+ yards running across the field towards one of the family groups that were yipping up a storm.

Last night, I alternated a lone coyote challenge with the coyote pup distress. Again, there were coyotes howling and yipping at us from 5 different directions. One was an obvious family group. FINALLY, after an hour one snuck in and got the whammy. We'd have never stuck it out that long if the other wildlife wasn't cooperating.

Anyway, any ideas, tips, secrets on how to get these stubborn coyotes to come in? Thanks!

Try a rabbit distress call. Also, if I allowed to, I suggest you go to predatormasters.com
A lot of knowledge there.

You need to make it hard for them to see you. Wear dark clothing and cover you face and hands. Don't move while calling.

Muley,

I've talked to several guys about this, especially Phil Shimonski, a coyote hunting guide in Eastern Oregon and writer of a book on this subject.
He says you are usually wasting your time hunting coyotes if you're not completely covered up with camo, as in a Ghillie suit or something similar.
Coyotes are incredibly smart and suspicious and can spot something out of place from huge distances. However, they can hear a good call from at least a mile away, so they always check out anything they are coming into before committing. (at least the smart ones do!).
After you've killed all the dumb ones, you'll probably need to invest in some kind of whole-body camo. I've looked at the Ghillie suits and will probably buy one soon, but the cost has kept me from committing at this point.
BTW, I've had the same thing happen many times but I'll keep trying. The dumb ones are just as much fun to shoot as the smart ones. - Sheister

Here are a few ideas you might consider.

These coyotes range over a large territory. They have learned that distress calls coming from your friends farm are tempting, but deadly. So call from somewhere else. Get permission from neighbors to call from their property. You can call those same coyotes from several square miles.

Set up your stand so there is a large open area down wind to discourage them circling behind. Have enough cover in front to make them feel comfortable about coming in close. If the wind is wrong, dont call from that stand.

If the coyotes are hanging up out of range, place a gun out there way in front of the caller. Try to anticipate the direction the coyotes will come from. Keep the gunner down wind of their approach.

Take your dog Spot hunting with you. Stake him out in broken cover and crank up the hurt pup tape. You might get the lead bitch to come to the rescue. They also might try to lure your dog out to them. See if they wont come in close enough for a shot. Try to position your stand between the dog and where you think the coyotes will come.

If this is farm country, drive the dirt roads at midday and try to spot resting coyotes. I have run into them while on squirrel safaris. The coyotes are accustomed to mechanized farm equipment moving and working around them. One more pick-up cruising around the fields wont cause undue stress. If you can find several favorite rest areas, you can shoot several coyotes out of the same area as others move into the territory. It is also a good way to polish your glassing and stalking skills.

Good luck

MS,
You might want to limit your tape player to short sequences (less than 30 sec). When you play the tape player continuously, a coyote can hone in on the sound source easier from a longer distance. They will often hang up from a distance and look things over, if the sound is continuous they might spot you. Even with hand calls I always glass around after completing my stand, I've killed many a dog(and had many more get away!) who would stay back and I would glass him staring at me from a few hundred yards away. You also need to try some new sounds as coyotes wise up fast (the dumb ones die young)

If they are barking at you, they have busted you and will not come in to anything. This goes along with some of the above. You need to sneak into your stand location without being seen or heard. Your camo is not as important as being still. Follow the good advice above on stand set-up and selection. Any camo will work. Be sure your hands and face are covered. And......don't move.

Good Hunting,

Bob

All I can tell you is what the experts say:

Make yourself a camo prom dress (<---- click here) and wear it (I'm not kidding! I plan to make and wear one of these myself).

Or get a good camo blind that you can shoot out of. Invisiblind is a good one, now being redesigned with a new camo pattern. Check with Ron Mueller at 1-406-777-5818.

And (as director Redford hollered at me once on a movie location) be still!

Ken, now THAT's a fine looking prom dress <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />! Might need something other than the white pumps with a bow to go with it though <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />.

Of course, finding size 13 pumps in any design is rather difficult <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />.
