Where I live, due to the low annual rainfall, it takes about 20 acres per cow. With as little rainfall as I have, I couldn’t be profitable with commercial cattle, so show calves it is.

Pretty much just 4H efforts around here (SE Oregon). With annual precip being about 12" annually, we do about 7 acres for a pair per month. That being, show stock rarely if ever runs on rangeland. Typically, dry lotted.

No, but I've seen one popping up on my FB feed.

This one plays the flute, and goes by the name of Lizzo.....

Big business around here, I showed dairy cattle when I was a kid but many friends and family show all different kinds of animals. One of my very best friends is big into show pigs....both of his kids received huge scholarships to Cal Poly for their efforts.... they have a damn 50k gooseneck trailer with heat and air conditioning.... they have been to something like 40 different states showing pigs lol. Crazy, but so are some of my "hobbies".

My nephew here on the farm raises black and red holstein for show and the neighbor gal raises brown swiss and ayrshire.

I’ll calve them in the pens, in case any need assistance, which with clubby bred cattle, they often do. Mommas and calves will stay in shaded pens until I’m sure calf is strong enough to deal with the heat here. After that they’re back out in the pasture with free choice creep feed available almost immediately. They’ll stay in the pasture until weaning, which is usually around 5-7 months. On weaning, they’re halter broken, transitioned to a developer feed, groomed and marketed.

Breeding is mostly artificial insemination or embryo transplants, followed by a cleanup bull.

The ranch up road a mile has some of the most sought after show cattle in USA, he has two million dollar sales a year, I have watched him develop his operation from when we were kids in the 70’s, he started artificially inseminating cows in the late 70’s too, it’s amazing to see these calf’s hit the ground and look like pit bull dogs, they are so high breed, his ranch is Black Hereford

It's my son's first year in 4H. We tagged two of our's. Last week they weighed 1015, and 975lbs. He's been working with them and they seem to be coming along nicely.

Here's a pic from Nov.

When our daughter started showing cattle, my Dad said I'd sell that equipment for a dime.

He was close to right.

The cattle "judges", I've seen stairstep the cattle, the tallest wins.

I showed heifers and steers when I was a kid. A lot of work, but very rewarding. A lot of good life lessons there too.

Yes as a kid. Great memories. My older sister and I showed heifers at Black and White Days in Richmond, Utah.

Not enough time on this place.
Too busy caring for the commercial cattle we run.

Years ago, Grandad Shubert won prizes at the NM State Fair, for his registered Herefords. '40's as I recall.
