Thanks, went back and seen the intro later but I'd guessed right on the money, figured it'd take 3 or 4 years of work to get him there.

My own experience is that, on an almost annual basis, one will be dumped by the most trusted of steeds.

You need to ride better horses then.

Pictures of you on any horse don't seem to be loading.

Strange?

Most problem horses were caused by problem riders. Barrel racers likely on or near the top of the list. There are a lot of amazing barrel racers, not all of them have a handle on their horse outside the barrel pattern.

I've owned half a dozen horses over the years.
Rented mountain horses in Wyoming.
Rode outfitter dude horses in some of Wyoming's most rugged country.
Worked as a Wrangler.
Tended to the needs of 60 horses.
Saddled a string of 25 horses at a time.
Seen good riders, bad riders and horrible injuries.

One thing for sure.

They ain't dogs..🤣

My son spent a few years as a Wrangler before moving on to his fire career..

Takes a lot of wet saddle blankets and daily handling in all types of situations to get a horse close to that point. Years and a calm steady hand. Lots of exposure to the world.

Some beautiful horses in here. I always like the TW's, never rode one. Was blessed to ride some good ones over the years. One boss rode a Missouri foxtrot , the other Morgan Foxtrot mix! Horses would bury a pack string! I guided one season off a former Denver mounted police horse that was full blood Morgan! Rode Dan into a crowded Lariat Saloon one Saturday afternoon! I got flamed for that one!

True.

Like a dog, you get out of a horse what you put into it.

Good horses and good dogs are a reflection of time invested.

Why Dan instead of the horse?

I have found that Walkers and Fox trotters make the best tempered mules if a person is selective.

I have had mules that I trusted with my life. However every horse or mule can have a bad day. Bad things can happen and they happen fast.. I have had darn good mules that lost their team mate or corral buddy that grieved so much you could not trust them. People forget that each breed of horse or mule is bred for certain jobs and think they can do everything. Put a well trained mount in an unfamiliar spot and they can get into trouble.

Some of those walker mounted guys that lead want to show how good their horse steps out makes it miserable for others, but a well trained horse should be able to go at any speed. It's the rider, not the horse. I have had walker mules that would out walk a lot of horses, but I could lead a string or put them in them in the middle and they would match with the others.

When you can tell that a guy is well versed in one or two subjects/areas, I always figure he is a savvy sonofabitch. When you encounter a guy who projects his knowledge in every subject/area that comes up, you can usually presume he's actually a dumb [bleep]. I smell a dumb [bleep] in this thread.

Slowing down a mule that loves to travel is harder than bumping one up to keep pace.

The sorrel mule I am on is from a Foxtrotter and has a lot of gears. He can slowdown when riding with quater horses and can keep a gait for miles with a bit of spur rub to keep motivation. His normal pace when out front will force a quater horse to trot a bit to keep up.

The bay mule is from a TN Walker and loves to travel. Put him in the front and everybody else better be on gaited stock and know how to keep them clippin through the rough.

Another of my mules from a TN Walker. She loves to putt along but can also really motor when ridden by someone who knows.
