After getting the kids set up with their own rifles over the past couple of years, they, along with my wife, returned the favor. I was told to pick out a new rifle for myself, for an early Christmas present while I still had some deer season left. Not one to argue, or give her too much time to rethink, I got right to it. I hunt open country, farmland whitetails here in Arkansas, but have plans to head west with my brothers and take on mulies and elk in the future. that being a consideration, I kept that in mind when choosing caliber. After looking at and shouldering everything that interested me, I found myself going back to the Browning BAR. I was thinking bolt action going into this, but couldn't get over the looks and feel of that particular rifle. My new rifle was going to be a BAR. My caliber choice came down to two. I was torn between the 30-06 and the 270 wsm. I was leaning towards the short mag, but was concerned about ammo availability. The versatility of the 30-06 made it a great choice, in my opinion. As it turns out, there are several factory loads available for the 270 wsm and after reading several articles by Craig Bottington and others, my mind was made up. Well, my Browning BAR short trac 270 wsm came home with me today. I have never been so excited over a rifle in my life. I have always been a leupold fan and saw no reason to change today, putting a VX-II 3x9 on top. I chose to start the sighting in process with a box of 150gr win power points, having had success with those in the past. That's all gonna start tomorrow, and I can't wait.
