Due to the success of the 10mm bear ammo run, I have done another run of heavy duty .45 ACP outdoors oriented/bear defense ammo after multiple requests from guys who own .45s and not 10s.
This ammo is a 250 grain hardcast flatpoint, with a large/wide flat meplat.











This is a +P load and averages 925 FPS from 5" 1911s that were used for testing.

That is essentially a .45 Colt in an Auto Pistol.

It also was run through my Glock 21, 4506 and HK USP .45.




A lot of .44 Special/.45 Colt revolver shooters shoot a load that is a duplicate of this. This was taking the same sized bullet in similar velocity range and putting it an auto pistol. It is similar in concept to the "Linebaugh Load" that is so popular with knowledgeable handgun hunters.

Here is an excerpt from John Linebaugh, speaking of shooting a .45 Colt 260 grain slug at 900 FPS:


"I have personally taken about 10 antelope and 1 mule deer with a .45 Colt. My boys have taken around 6 antelope and 5 mule deer with their .45 Colts. They use a 4 3/4" Colt SA and the handload is a 260 Keith cast at 900 fps. This load will shoot lengthwise of antelope and mule deer at 100 yards."

Essentially the heavy .45 ACP loads (250 grain bullet at 925 FPS) are following the same thought process, in a different platform, for those who prefer to carry a semi auto.










This is a load I carry frequently in Grizzly and Black Bear (as well as other predator) country.

For those who will ask, I prefer a 20# spring in my Glock 21, and 1911 when running these. They were designed to run with fresh (not worn out) standard weight springs in guns in proper working order, but I still use a heavier spring, as I tend to shoot this load a fair bit.

Love this ammo Ted. If you don’t mind me asking, I just picked up a USP and was wondering if you found it necessary or advantageous to change anything when shooting this ammo? Thanks!

I have not changed anything That said, it went back to the factory last year and had all the springs replaced since it was a 90s gun (along with putting a different trigger system in it, versus the traditional DA/SA). The USPs are tanks and many people who build extremely heavy loads such as .45 Super, use the USP as their platform of choice.

It went from a mediocre trigger to an amazing one. The HK USP and Glock 21 are in my opinion the two best polymer .45s on the market when a guy wants an all around .45 that can be used for everything from casual shooting, to home defense duties, as well as outdoors use.

Thanks Ted. Did you have the match trigger installed? I agree, the trigger could be better.

Edit: Since the match trigger is still da/sa I’d love to know what you had installed. 🧐

HK installed a hybrid match LEM and it is truly night and day different. Not sure the best way to describe it other than it is sort of a cross between a match Glock trigger and a 1911 trigger.
