A wealthy lawyer was approached for a major contribution to a community financial campaign. The urgent need and compelling case were stated, and the proposal made.
The lawyer responded: "I understand why you think I can give you $100,000. Yes, I own a thriving business, and I exhibit all the signs of affluence. But there are some things you don't know. Did you know my Mother is in an expensive retirement home?" The visiting solicitors had to admit they didn't.
"Did you know also that my brother died with almost no life insurance to support his wife and four children?" Again the response was "No."
"And," he continued, "Did you know my son is deeply religious and has gone into social work? He makes less than the national poverty level to support himself and his family." Almost embarrassed, his visitors had to admit they had no idea.
The lawyer finally dismissed them saying, "Well then, if I don't give any of them a penny, why do you think I'll give anything to you?"
