The NC House voted today to override Gov. Roy Cooper's veto of SB 41 which included the pistol purchase permit repeal. Now, North Carolinians will no longer have to go to their sheriff's dept to get a permit. They will only need to go through a NICS check if they purchase from a FFL. This was only 104 years in the making.

More winning.

The desert is a true treasure for him who seeks refuge from men and the evil of men.
In it is contentment
In it is death and all you seek

Every time I previously read about having to get permission from a sheriff in NC to buy a pistol, I envisioned some little tin-pot dictator like this:

So no change to concealed carry permission? The free to purchase is huge though by itself.

Our tin pot sheriff took down the Bookings and mug shot web link after his own daughter got arrested for daycare child abuse and his brother got caught banging a beagle

A beagle you say, I wouldn't have thought that possible. You sure it wasn't a pig and the pig squealed on him ? grin

It was a redundant holdover law that was put in place before federal background checks were required. It served no legitimate purpose and every sheriff's department that wasn't Mecklenburg(Charlotte) or Wake(Raleigh) was in favor of abolishing the law. If you had a CCP you didn't need the purchase permit, but it was still just a roadblock for legal purchase.
