Me and the boy took the skiff down to the lake Saturday evening to see about trolling up the first Saugeye of the year, only to discover at the ramp that Ol’ Dad had forgot the plug box on the porch. 🤦‍♂️

Endeavoring to persevere we went ahead and launched and got the crappie gear out. We motored over to some brush piles and tied up to jig a little bit and see if we could pick a few slabs up.

In no time I hear him holler from the front of the boat, “Dad I think I got something”. I look over the bow to see his rod down in the water up to the third eyelet. I told him I thought he was hung up and we’d have to break it off. About that time it went to thrashing and I realized he did have something!

I grabbed the net and he swung one of the bigger sandbass I’ve ever seen up alongside the boat where I scooped it up.

I ended up with three crappie and a little 9” sandy but he told everyone who’d listen that his was WAY bigger. 👍

We turned her loose since they aren’t much for eating but did get a good pic.

We went down to jig the rocks this evening because it was too windy to get the boat out. Crappie aren’t quite there yet, saw a few caught but none for us. We did manage 2 sandbass, 1 channel cat, 1 blue cat, and 3 drums on crappie jigs. Everything but what we were after. And of course we had a lot of fun which is the best part.

Is a "sand bass" the same as a white bass? If so, that's a dandy. For their size they put up a good fight on light gear. I don't care for eating them but catching is a ton of fun.

I’m pretty sure they’re the same thing. They’re our state fish and I’m not sure what the official name is. They are a blast to catch especially if you get into schools of them and you’re using light gear. They’ll hit about anything when they’re schooled up chasing bait.
