One of main reasons the wine barrel finished bourbons are so much “smoother” is because the wine barrel wood quality is much better. The air drying for wine barrel wood is minimum 24-36 months. Bourbon wood is dried in kiln oven, which leads to harsher tannin… there are some higher end bourbon producers now buying new wine quality wood oak barrels because the end product is so much better.

Would like to try that but alas it’s probably not available in Utah.

What do the basil Hayden’s haters prefer? Say under $100 a 1/5?

Currently working on a bottle of Wild Turkey Rare Breed from Costco. $50 down here. Pretty great for that price point. Another is Four Roses small batch and/or single barrel. I rarely spend more than $50-60 on a bottle so can’t speak to the under $100 criteria.
Not trolling the Basil Hayden too hard… just not quite my preference. Have been gifted a few of there bottles in the last few years… I will drink them but won’t buy them. The smoke one is the worst of the lot; with the dark rye as the best IMO.

If rye is your taste and Basil Hayden isn't you should try Michters straight rye or Redemption rye, both are very good and well within reach for price.
Rye on the cheap Bullitt, Knob Creek, and last for me Wild Turkey.
Straight bourbon is a different story all together.

I like Basil Hayden, but have not seen the Red Cask. The Standard and Dark Rye is very enjoyable IMO. I have enjoyed a lot of Burning Chair bourbon, which is also finished in red wine casks. I don't pay much attention to proof, I either like it of I don't. The cask strength stuff can sometimes sneak up on you though.

The main reason a whiskey like that is smooth is due to the low proof. That bottle is only 80 proof. While I do like Jim Beam products, the Basil Hayden is one of my least favorites. Much better ryes out there IMHO.
