That sucks.
Had a buddy who rode some ice near there many years ago. Got both ankles but he survived. Ended his ice climbing.
RIP.

Same level of stupid that wants to play with contained explosions day in and day out; and talk about it on the internet.

Different strokes for different folks; glad we are a free country and they can pursue their passions, and we can pursue ours.

Only if you’re reloading way above maximum and blowing up guns as a result.

It was plain stupid to go out and climb that ice column with as warm as it’s been the last two weeks. Some HS kids decided to go out on the reservoir just south of me. Two fell through the thin ice. One didn’t make it. There’s nothing wrong with going out on the ice - when it’s thicker than 2” and cold!

That may very well be. My comment was not specific to the weather the last two weeks as I don’t believe the post I was responding to was, either. Spring ice can actually be pretty good, with warmer days and cold nights forming some pretty decent ice.

Point I was trying to make is that I’m sure we all do something that others deem stupid and dangerous; whether it be riding motorcycles fast, playing with guns, climbing up really steep mountains to chase goats, etc. But we are blessed to live in a free country, where we are all relatively free to pursue whatever chosen activity (within reason) that makes us tick.

"ice climbers" What in God's name makes a person wake up one day and decide climbing ice would be a hoot?

I would guess that the bulk of the readership here does not. They sit at home during their free time, watch television, eat fast food, sit around. Generally lead lives that avoid stress, danger, physical exertion, etc.

The reaction always, when someone is injured doing something that 100s of 1000s of people do without injury every year, is that if the person had just sat home watching TV they would not have been injured, therefore that person is stupid for taking the risk. People who live without any sort of challenges usually have some mental problems.

Good points.

Many couch sitters don't mind their "breasts" bouncing when they go down a flight of stairs. Perfect customers for Nike products before donning their Carhartt. For some, the trip out to the mailbox is a workout.

Many grow a beard to give themselves a veneer of masculinity in today's neuter-culture assault.

We see ~60% actual females on trails in the North Cascades in the summer. Same with closer-in trails. Guessing many "men" are busy at their coffee shop, bookstore, tattoo parlor and bike repair jobs.

To me, white water rafting and to kayak is more dangerous than climbing ice.

We marvel at aged elk and bear hunters. That is some bust-ass and hazardous work.
