1) I have a bolt action that I’m thinking about sending to PAC-Nor to have barreled. Could I then send out the whole barreled action to have nitrided or are they nitrided individually and then assembled? I’m assuming that they’re probably done separately but I haven’t been able to find any info on the sequence searching the net.

2) Whats a good place to send out a single barrel and action to have the work done? I’ve had a couple of rifles that were nitrided but it was handled through smiths doing builds. It seems most places specialize in bulk commercial orders.

Thanks for that. I’ve looked around the net some more and they seem to come up a lot in recommendations for nitriding. I’ll give them a call tomorrow.

Do you have a photo of the finished rifle? What does the finish look like?

You don't want to nitride thin stuff, like mag boxes and springs 'cause they can warp with the heat. Just do the barrel, receiver, bolt and bolt shroud (if steel). You'll want to strip the bolt. In a perfect world you'd separate the receiver and barrel so there are no nitriding salts left in the thread joint, or you can disassemble and clean and lube the threads after nitriding. Also, I've heard you can also soak the barreled action in a bathtub for a few days which will also leach out any salt residue left in the thread joint.

Does anyone know if you can salt bath nitride a Cerakoted action, or must the Cerakoting be removed?
