I'm looking for a pair of svelte, steel rings and bases for a couple hunting rifles.

Can anyone provide me with some feedback on the S&K Scope Mounts, specifically the SKulptured bases? How robust is the setup? Would they be suitable for a light weight, magnum rifle? (Two words that should never be used in the same sentence.)

Thanks.

I have been very satisfied with the S&K mounts i have on my 2 Pre 64 M70 hunting rifles with several years of use on each. I have not experienced any zero shifts on week long backpacking hunts here in Arizona. Don't know about magnums, but they have help up fine with 200 gr 30-06 loads I use in the 30-06 Featherweight in an MCM Edge stock. The only weak point would be the diameter of the base to receiver screws in my opinion, but those could be upsized if needed...

I'm switching to all S&K rings and mounts as i upgrade My scopes they are fairly light, look good, and don't snag on stuff like My Talleys. So far no trouble with them at all.

I assume they're 6x48 screws going from base to receiver?

Are there any issues with getting the rings to align, as it looks as if the rings are held in place by a screw?

Thanks for all the info so far.

Yes, they are the standard 6-48 screws. The rings self align with the scope tube by design. Both front and rear rings are aligned by coned set screws mating to a vee tapered slot in the rings. They can be centered to the base itself or offset slightly to center windage if needed. I like to offset the rear slightly to better clear the bolt handles on my pre-64s.

Got a set for a M70. To my eye they look great. Sleek and clean. They seem to really grip the scope well. You do get what you pay for.

My FN Mauser 30-06 has worn them for years with zero issues. I'm pretty sure I have a set of unused bases for the M700 that I will not use.

They are light weight and plenty strong. Very happy with them.

I’ve seen them on an Echols Legend 458 Lott. That ought to tell you something of their ability to hold a scope.

So if I understand correctly, there should be no pinching or binding the scope tube.

Thanks for all the pictures, will be ordering a couple sets.

EdM: if the bases are matte, I'd be interested.

Indeed.

I've used both the S&K mounts and the similar ones the late Dave Gentry used to make, which used Conetrol bases.

Both makes are very light AND strong, and due to their design also don't tend to mark up scopes--unless you're one of those who thinks rings need to be REALLY tightened to hold scopes firmly. I especially preferred them on lighter-weight, hard-kicking rifles, but they work very well on anything--and unlike many of today's mounts are also somewhat adjustable for windage.

Sweet rifle. Still wondering what rifle the OP is going to put these mounts on?? If a pre 64 model 70, or similar rifle, I'd also look at Conetrols, as well. If he's wanting that look:

To me, the aesthetics of the Control rings and bases are a cleaner look. However, give me a good set of DD's and I'm happy. Especially on most model 70 winchesters.

I have a set of Conetrol on a light .338 win mag that have held perfectly for over twenty years. Looks like S&K are about the same thing, but not sure. Sleek and light. Takes a little head scratching the first time you assemble the rings, but the design is simple and works well. The sculpted and polished bases look great in my opinion.

I have about 15 rifles with Conetrols.... then I discoverd S&K .

I now use S&K for my mounts. I think the S&K are a little easier to use than Conetrols, albeit, there is not a thing wrong with the Conetrols.

The last rifle I used the S&K 's on was a Winchester Model 100 .308.
