I bought some 303 Savage ammo thru a web sight. Has anyone heard of
Jamison? I fired half a dozen, seemed to group well but the case split on a couple. Is this just junk brass or has it been reloaded too much? Bruce

Where did the cases split?

Mike...

All said, the Savage 99 is a genius of a rifle. Although no longer produced, it remains highly revered, as it was the foundation from which Arthur Savage built one of America's great gun companies. >> (Jon Y. Wolfe) <<

About 1/3 of the way from the rim. About 3/8th of an inch long.

I'd heard that it's not as sturdy as some other commercial brass, but it shouldn't split on the first firing. Was it reloads or new loads with new brass? Jamison made a run of 303 Savage brass this spring, so I would think it would be new if someone's selling it commercially.

And, any signs of high pressure? Flattened primer or anything?

Bruce
That Was Jaminson Problem With there Very 1st Run,,,I can Remember Some Members I think Complaining About that.
It was told It was A Problem with there 1st 500,000 Cases Produced. "A Bad Batch Of BRASS"

The Next 2-3 Million Cases Where Good. Now They Will Not Produce Until there Goverment Contract Runs Out.
I Have Jaminson From 1st Run about 300 Rounds and loaded them on the Light Side and all Was Fine,,I Have 3500 Rounds Of the Later Run and Loaded them Normal to Heavier Side and all Worked Well.

That's good then.. according to Steve it's just some questionable brass, but it should be fine for shooting. Just ain't gonna be worthwhile for too many reloads.

I got about 3 Loadings on the Orginal Batch,,on ones that did not split.
But Annealing with candle helps. Also Bruce may Want to have the Chamber Checked,,,On 2 Of my 303's Some Cases Split On the Others Where Fine! There was about .003 in Difference on the O.D.'s Near the Neck. On the Rifles them Selfs.

On the Newer Run of Brass I'am getting 5 Loadings and Going on 6!

I Like the Norma Brass Much Better! I think Norma has a Better Grade Of Brass.J.M.O. but it's Costly! But I have had 8 Loadings already On Some of the Norma! But I keep My Loads on the Lighter Side. I belive I gave Ya Some a Year ago or So,,I Know Les Tried Em.

Only reloaded yours once so far, but I stick with the lighter loads also. No problems.. did have to trim some back, think it was the reformed 30-40Krag. Rest of mine's holding up well, but only shoot a 50-60 rounds of 303 a year. Need more 303's in the stable. grin

Rifles!! Got two 30-30's now, three 250's, five 300 Savages, etc.. but only one 303.

Well, two if you count my 1895, but it's not really in shape to shoot yet.

Sounds precisely like my experience with Bertram Brass. I bought 100 pieces and only had 40 survive their first firing. I don't know if it was the alloy they were using or if the brass was properly annealed. In any event, I called the outfit I bought it from and they told me I wasn't the first to register this complaint. After this, I started using reformed Remington .30-40 brass. It works fine in both my .303's.

Huntaria, if you don't mind a little work, you can make you 303 brass form 307 winny brass, I have a write up on it on my web site, it is a damn sight stronger than that 30-40 stuff. A couple of guys here have done it from my write up too. Had that happen to some Bertrams that I had bought, Bertrams made it right and sent me another hundred. I will definitely do business with Bertrams again, the reasoning was the brass wasn't annealed properly. Les

Stronger? Geez, when I resize my 30-40 brass it about rips the press of the bench. Definitely work up a sweat.. I'm thinking that stuff should be strong enough for about 50 reloads.

Trust me, I sawed some in half just to see how thick the case walls were, that 307 stuff is thicker than any of them. grin

Thanks! I'll check your recipe out. I certainly believe it about the .307 Winchester brass (probably the same is true of the new .308 Marlin stuff as well). I remember when Winchester came out with this in the 70's--they beefed up brass and rifle.

My experience with Bertram was different. They were ready (well at least the USA seller was ready) to refund my money, but didn't really seem to care if their brass worked or not.

I'm thinking on trying the 308 Marlin stuff, as I won't have to trim as much off. Les

Les, does the 307 brass raise pressures due to reduced case space? Would think there'd be a cost to thicker brass.

I have also read you can re-size .220 Swift brass to form .303 Savage. Anyone here tried that?
