Following a unanimous vote by the City Council Thursday morning, Minneapolis became the first major American city to allow unfettered broadcast of the Muslim call to prayer.

Thursday's action – a change to the city's noise ordinance – ensures that the call to prayer, or adhan, can be broadcast from speakers year-round, five times a day. Previously, the city's noise rules prevented some morning and evening calls at certain times of the year because they occurred at night, when tighter noise restrictions are in place.

"The Constitution doesn't sleep at night," Jaylani Hussein, executive director of the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said after the vote. Hussein said the development should serve as a signal to the world that a "nation founded on freedom of religion makes good on its promise."

The night I arrived in Bahrain at around 0300 or 0400 in the morning, I was awakened out of a dead sleep trying to figure out where the hell I was by the yelling coming from the Royal Palace across the street. It took a while for my heart to settle down and allow me to get back to sleep.

Ist amendment does not specify any particular religion. Therefore any and all religions are covered under it. The genius of the Constitution is its ambiguity.

The article is about the fact that it is now 5 times a day. Not just that
they can do it. Nuisance ordances were changed.
I'm assuming, and navlav8r suggests, that it is outside the times that loud noises
would normally be approved.


I get up at 430 AM. But I darn sure wouldn't want someone else having the right to blast music at 3. I'm sleeping then, and deserve to be left alone.


Some churches here have bells on the clocks, the courthouse does too.
No idea what time the stop ,but you never hear them at night.
The police and foreman don't even use sirens after a certain time unless
absolutely necessary.

I lived in St. Paul about 30 years ago for a short bit. It was a great place at the time. I've been back several times since then. You could offer me 6 figures and I wouldn't move back.
