Trying to release the fifth wheel and move the tractor. He probably didn't back up the tractor to release the pressure so he could not pull the fifth wheel.

Something he should have done before he crossed the tracks, not on them.

That's right. He was scared and only had a few seconds to pull that pin. At least he had the brains to run away.

He is now seeking a new career.
