The snow finally melted off my lawn. Some rodent, I guess, carved up my grass.
There’s zig zag inch wide and inch deep runway on the surface of my lawn. And there’s lots of chewed grass in these runways.
What kind of critter did this and how do I prevent next winter?

We used to have lots of moles doing that on our property. Now we have 2 8 Month old Great Pyrenees puppies (about 80 pounds each). Now we have no moles but LOTS of pot holes. At least the boys are enjoying themselves.

Moles looking for grubs. We get moles every year if we don’t apply grub control.

Taught my daughter about voles when she was 3. In pre school, the teacher was featuring mammals and asked the kids if anyone knew what a vole was. My daughter raised her hand and said that it's a type of underground varmint.

My neighbor has them bad. Had a den in the front yard last year. Had my grandson help me put some gas bombs in the holes. He thought it was great seeing the gas come out of the ground. 2 Huskies in the back yard, so nothing could survive back there.

One thing that helped at my place is reducing the copious amounts of mulch around my yard - they love living in that stuff.
With the grass nearby, the get to dine all winter.

Caught lots of them this way.

But there were always more.

Found some spray that they dislike the smell. That would get them to move, but then you'd have them in another place.

You'd think the owls and hawks would put a hurt on them. Only raptor I ever saw eating one was a turkey vulture.

My daughter had them in her yard. Along with a family of Great Horned Owls that thrived on them.
