I am in the starting stages of putting together a trade of OBAMA era EBRs and guns where I lost interest in their development to make a purchase on one of two different rifles. They are at the LGS and it likely that I will come up with some kind of deal for one or the other but probably not both. Which one would you take between A and B? A is 1886 45/70 manufactured in 1896. It is completely original. B is 1895 405 Original Winchester What say you folks to one or the other.

I'd lose sleep over that choice.

Beautiful, but out of my price range.

A M1886 made in 1896 should have a case colored lever and hammer, not blued. Wood isn’t proud at the tang, looks to be sanded. Sling swivels are not original.
Wood on the M1895 also isn’t proud at the tang and the bluing looks too good.

Totally agree with Poconojack. From the pictures these both appear re-blued and sanded and refinished wood, and definitely not Winchester swivels from what I have ever seen.

Those pictures are only fair at best. It appears like 2 refinished guns. As Poconojack says, the 1886 should be color case on the receiver. As refinished guns, they are still desirable, but not worth as much as if they were original…

I'd agree that they certainly look refinished. I generally like 86s more than 95s but I might chose the 95 in this case assuming it has a Lyman 21/38 sight
