I’m looking at a 700 Mtn Rifle locally and there seems to be bubbling or freckling on the black forend “cap” of the stock. They are just tiny little bubbles. Have you seen this before?

Many that I have seen have large flakes or peeling spots on the black.

A few years back i bought a Ruger 77RL that had that same flaking and peeling on the black forend, as well. I believe it was varnish or some other finish that didn't adhere well to the ebony. I wet sanded it all off the end cap and applied a few coats of Renaissance Wax. It looks like the day it left the factory.

My Mtn Rifle has it as well. Not super noticeable unless you look really close though.

Seems to be more noticeable on the matte finish stocks.

I’ve rarely seen an ebony forend that didn’t have at least some bubbling or flaking of the finish.

Mine had it when I bought it from the late Timbermaster here, and it worsened on a mountain hunt with Ready. I sent it to Karnis for a refurb, and now it's almost too pretty to hunt with. Almost...

Yup - that rifle's been around the 'Fire a good bit.

Like others have stated, I've seen it as well.

This is really great info. Thank y’all for sharing your experience. I have a friend that has a 270 he said he’s thinking about selling. He’s had it since we were kids. We’re 49-50 now. I remember it being a shooter too!

Far off the topic of polishing yer forend tip, but...

If you had a 700 Mountain Rifle in 280 Rem what would you scope it with?

perfectly normal, I've picked up a couple used ones lately in 308 and 280, both had it.

You can take some fine sandpaper and buff them out, then refinish the tip with some tung oil.
