Hear me out on this fellas, but I think these two are more alike than different.
Both undeniably shred on the geetar.
Both in power trios with great bands.
Both had crazy good tone that made thousands if not millions of geetar players really take notice.
Both had a great sense of groove.
Both played geetars that one could recognize in a glimpse as well as stage presence that was incredibly unique.
I honestly couldn't pick a fav between these two as it would depend mostly on my mood. I remember exactly where I was when I heard they had died and somehow their deaths made me want to dive into their music even more.
Here are my favs from each with a few thoughts. Would love to hear yours as well.
The Brown Sound
Old Marshall amps with a Variac to drop the voltage was the rumor. Talk about a mysterious tone!
After Eddie died, I spent a few weeks listening to VH non stop with the intent to find his best ever geetar tone imho. Turns out, my fav Eddie tone comes attached to his worst ever guitar sound in the same song! I have a few really good friends that are great guitar players and we have a group text amongst us. One of the fellas is a huge EVH fan and I mentioned the greatest EVH tone and worst being on the same song and dang if he didn't already have it nailed down.
What a great groove. Hate the opening geetar sound with the volume rolled off, but when he turns it up......
.13 gauge strings tuned down a half step. Cesar Diaz keeping his amps alive as well as building him pedals. 60's partscaster beat to absolute schît. Almost too much mystery for a budding young guitar player to try and figure out.
I'll never get over Live at the El Macambo.
I don't listen to either all that much these days. Certainly couldn't choose a fav though.
What say ye?

Ecc 10:2 The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but that of a fool to the 24HCF.
Grew up in Pasadena, VH played my high school freshman dance. Later saw them in a number of settings. I'm not hearing their styles are being very closely related , but their stage presence ..yes.

I didn't mean it as their styles are similar.
More alike than different kinda like a .260 and a 6.5 Creed..... LOL

Never was a big VH fan. Too much EVH starts to grate on my nerves. Like 3 or 4 songs from the original group, but I liked Van-Hager better. 😬 My favorite, though is the remake they did of Roy Orbinson’s “Pretty Woman”
There’s not one SRV song I dislike. He’ll always be the best IMO. Played a beat to schitt old Strat and old Fender Tube amps. Didn’t need a bunch of “special effects, either. And unlike EVH, SRV could actually sing.
"Allways speak the truth and you will never have to remember what you said before..." Sam Houston Texans, "We say Grace, We Say Mam, If You Don't Like it, We Don't Give a Damn!"
I love EVH at his best, but Stevie blows him away every time. No contest, especially with Texas Flood in the lineup.
Yep.

Lots of videos of SRV jamming with Buddy Guy, Jeff Healey, et al. Virtually nothing of EVH playing with other guitarists.
SRV did some stuff with Bowie, as well. EVH?? Well, he played the solo on “Beat It”, but what else did he do??
Yeah, EVH was a good guitarist, but he basically did “Van Halen”, and that was it.
I don’t say this as a huge SRV “fanboy”. I’d much rather listen to Duane Allman/Dickey Betts/Toy Caldwell/Gary Moore/etc.
Guess I’m trying to say that EVH was kind of a “one trick pony”, in a certain sense..
If I listen to more than 3 Van Halen songs, it all starts sounding like this:
fburgtx,
You bring up a great point that I've been meaning to make about guitar players, but haven't taken the time to, so thanks.
Here goes.
When I play guitar, I sound like me. Good or bad, love it or hate it, it's just me. I approach the guitar a certain way and have my own voice that is inescapable when it comes to tone, phrasing etc. Rather than emulate the great guitar players, I've found that emmersing myself in great music has always seemed to inspire my way of playing in subtle ways that amuse me.
EVH might have been a one trick pony, but what a trick eh?!!!
Seriously, the guy inspired millions!
I went to see an 80's band last night in a small club. The keyboard player ran sound for us on Fri night and I wanted to go support his band. They were great! The guitar player played all the tunes note for note and had the tones completely dialed! They did SRV, EVH, GnR, Crúe, White Snake, Boston etc. All sounded exactly like the record.
And while it was amazing to hear some great old tunes with the exact notes played at the perfect time, I'd rather listen to a guy with his own personality play tunes he and his band came up with even if he doesn't have 30 tricks up his sleeve.
EVH was the original and will always be.
Vai, Satch, Yngwe etc. never had the mojo quite like him did they?

Ooops.
I forgot to mention that Texans don't get a vote unless it's for Lyle Lovett.
So, one for Lyle.

LOL. Just like SRV, nearly everything is better in TX. The Truth hurts. 😜
