What's a good time to send a barrel in to get nitrided? After it's had a few hundred rounds through it? Before that? How much wear is acceptable? Presumably there can't be any firecracking, etc?

Kevin Weaver will break in a barrel and then have it nitrided then reinstalled back on the receiver.
