More states should follow suit.

Democrats claim welfare fraud is low - yeah, right

Iowa lawmakers pass new asset test for SNAP benefits that could kick off thousands

Iowa lawmakers have approved a bill to require new asset tests for people receiving food assistance benefits, and regular eligibility checks on all public assistance recipients to make sure they qualify.

The Iowa House voted 58-41 Thursday evening to pass Senate File 494, with only Republicans voting in favor. Five Republicans joined Democrats in voting no after nearly four hours of debate.

The Senate passed the bill in March, so the House vote sends it to Gov. Kim Reynolds for her signature.

The bill culminates years of efforts from Iowa Republicans to place new requirements and identity verification on those receiving public assistance benefits, which supporters say will save taxpayer dollars and ensure benefits are going to those who need them.

"If you’re eligible for the benefit, you will receive the benefit," said Rep. Joel Fry, R-Osceola, the bill's floor manager. "It protects the program for those who need it most, and I would suggest to you that we are creating a safety net that is sustainable for the long term."

Democrats and a coalition of nonprofits and anti-hunger advocates have argued against the bill, pointing out that fraud is low, deserving families could lose benefits and food assistance like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is entirely federally funded.

Any money saved will be diverted to other bullschit.
We all know that.

But it is still a good thing to enact some QC on it.

So kudo,s to Iowa.

The 5 Repubs that sided with the Liberal Socialist Democrats...
Well that is a Iowa voter issue right their that needs to be dealt with.....

Welfare fraud in its many shapes and forms across the nation is a huge issue....

Welfare was my biggest competition as a Army Recruiter for 3 yrs in my White Bread home state of Maine....

Stand in line behind a EBT fuuuka at a grocery store will tick you off seeing what they buy...

Soda/ big Ole fountain drinks at convenience stores here is EBT eligible...
That's just scratching the surface.

Big gig around here.
Is buying meat and fish for roadside food sales bullschitt.
Groups of 1.0,s all over town doing that schit now that weather is getting better.
Usually that 1st weekend after their cards get loaded up.

Looks like they could end up spending more to make sure that ineligible recipients don't get assistance than it would to just give them the assistance.

I don't have a problem with that. At least the inspectors are working a job for the money.

Just another issue. We are really starting to get a lot of folks moving into the State. I only want those who are going to go to work and earn a living to come. The more handouts the State gives the more wrong people will be showing up. We have been getting a lot of former [bleep] folks moving in. If they want freebies they need to stay in Illinois. Not here.

100%. Long term it'll save money once people realize the gravy train has left the station.

Whatever we can do to combat the mindset that "the government owes me something" is a win.

That's one of the things that destroyed Minnesota (Twin Cities specifically).

Wisconsin passed welfare reform in the mid '90s, and throusands of welfare rats moved to Mineapolis and St Paul from Milwaukee in '95-'99. Mexicans moved to MN in the late '90s/early 2000's by the thousands because they heard that the bennies there were some of the best in the country. MN imported 10K-15K Somalians during that time also, thanks to Lutheran Social Services and Catholic Relief. They all went straight on the dole as well.

I lived in the Twin Cities metro area in the mid/late '90s. We moved to ND in '99, because I could see where things were heading. My friends and coworkers scoffed at me when I told them what was coming their way. They aren't laughing now.

Just a version (on a smaller scale) of what's happening to the whole Country now under Democrat rule. If things don't change soon there will be no place to move to get away from it in this country. I watched it happen in my home town in the early 90's. I moved in 93. The place is a schitt hole now. It used to be beautiful.

MuskegMan: I have espoused for MANY decades now, that ALL welfare recipients should take a mandatory drug test EVERY MONTH and pass it or NO welfare benefits at all!
This policy would put an end to much crime and much bastardization of chidrins!
The "great society" (welfare ratization!) has killed more Americans and ruined more Americans lives than all of the United States foreign enemies put together!
And its just getting worse.
Sad.

They need to go after all the Illegals receiving EBT cards and Welfare benefits too.

You wouldn’t believe the number of big ole fat wetback women with 4 or 5 fat kids in tow at the grocery stores using EBT cards. And then watch them drive away in a damn near new Suburban or Lincoln Navigator. 😡

That’s exactly what happened as well as those who moved there to eventually get on Minnesota’s unemployment benefits that were about the highest in the nation back then.

Left there in 95 for the exact same reasons...don't regret it... but its hard to find anywhere there is NOT welfare abuse in this nation... I do remember requiring people to report weekly or submit proof they were applying for jobs back in the 90s.

50 to 60% of welfare recipients dropped off the rolls fairly quickly.. I'm sure a year later most were right back on them.
I'm also sure many of them had a job, and just collected welfare under a different assumed identity.

"Welfare fraud" is a rounding error and inconsequential unless the names start with Boeing, Lockheed, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, etc. But, it gives the kloset klannies something to crow about.
