Having a M70 worked on. Barrel will be new. Another 06? 338-06? Whelen? Have a 9.3x62 and a 7x57 already. Thoughts?

I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Given the others you have I'd do another 30-06.

Only have the one 06. Seems like the one I need most. Thinking 23 inch tube.

I'd go 22" myself. Don't go with too heavy of a contour either. They don't have to be heavy as a truck axle to shoot well. A good quality barrel and your receiver properly glass bedded and trigger fine tuned, is all you really need. If you have someone that knows what he's doing, do the work, it will drive tacks and make bug hole groups.. Good luck with your project. Post some pics when it's done!!!

Another 06 seems to fill the void. I had a Kreiger #3 put on a 5 digit featherweight classic, chambered in 35 whelen. I love it. It does stomp pretty hard, but it shoots unbelievably good and knocks the crap out of the elk! Mine started out as a 280, but I have a 7mm-08 that shoots 140 partitions at 2922 consistently, so I felt like the 280 could be a good donor here. I missed what you said you plan to hunt with it.

I always figure there are lots of 30.06 already, and if I'm going to have a new barrel made, might as well chamber it for something that is not so easy to find. You have the 9.3 and the 7x57 = so that somewhat discounts the other 7's and the Whelan. 338.06 is something you could chamber that you'll never just happen to find at the LGS. Do you have use for a 338? No reason to get it unless you have a use for it. But I do believe the 338 will be an upgrade in many ways to the likes of a 9.3 or 35. At the same time, your mind started and seems to be ending with the 30.06. When I put a new barrel on It cost the same to ream a 06 Imp as it did a standard. I like the 06 Imp more than I thought I would, more than I hoped I would. It shoots heavies well. 180 Gr at 2925-2930 fps and real good sd. If you wanted to lighten it up, the 257 Bob is a chambering that has lots of satisfied customers.

I'd go with either a 280 AI, I've built two on pre 64 M70's and am a big fan or a 6.5-284.

.30/06.
Might get it twisted a bit tighter for playing with some extra-long bullets in the off season. I know it’s a snoozer to some, but I find the old standbys easy to supply, easy to load for, and easy to sell if it comes to that. I have a few guns for outside-the-box cartridges, but at least a couple are beginning to climb in of late.
What fresh Hell is this?

Got a 30-06, 25-06, 6.5x55 and a 6.5x06. 260 Rem on the way! 6.5's seem to me the most neglected cartridge's going in this country. Had 270 and a 280 in the past. The case is simply ideal size and easy to come by. I know that if I was going to get another rifle it would be one based on either the 30-06 or 308 case. Probably get pretty much any caliber in either case!

the great thing about a 30-06 is ammo can be found any place in the world , 30-06 shoot well ,is powerful enough for most hunting , reloading supplies is easy to find for this grand old cartridge too.

I would convert it to the exotic 7.62x63...everyone knows a .275 Rigby is superior to the 7x57.
Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

Based on your current inventory the 30-06 fits nicely for all purpose hunting. I’d go 22-inch barrel. You’ll get 3,100 fps with 150 gr loads and 2,650 fps with 200 gr loads. As far as a 338-06 or 35 Whelen, both great chambers however your 9.3x62 will cover any game needs they could and then some. The 30-06 and 9.3x62 would make for a formidable duo as a light/heavy combination around the globe. With 22-inch barrel the 06 could be lightened a bit and make for a nice elk/mountain toting rifle with plenty of power and plenty of distance at all hunting ranges. The 7x57 could do somewhat the same, but I would rather employ the 06 with 165, 180, 190 and 200 grain loads for heavy game over the 7mm. A 10 twist barrel is fine for hunting all loads with the 06. You may wish to utilize high BC 225 gr class bullets and go to a 9 twist, but how often will you utilize that load. Both twist rates would still hurl 110, 125 and 130 grain loads, perhaps the 10 twist would favor better accuracy when loading light weights.
