I had a Sukalle .257 Roberts for a while--which was probably stocked by somebody else, as I've never found any reference to Sukalle being anything other than a machinist. It was based on a military 98 Mauser action, and would consistently put three 100-grain Ballistic Tips into 1/2" at 100 yards.
Among the rifles Jack O'Connor had barreled by Sukalle was a .257 he had made for Eleanor. His friend (and eventually mine) "Buck" Buckner eventually ended up with the rifle, and says it shoots the same way.
Did an article on my rifle a while back, and while researching it found that Sukalle was asked to machine some of the parts for NASA after it was first organized. They sent him the tooling--which Sukalle rejected as unable to do the job right.
Can't remember where I got that info, but seem to remember it was from an article in an old American Rifleman, but it also might have come from the late Mike Petrov, who originally contributed to this thread before he passed away too young. Mike had the most complete collection of American Riflemans I've ever seen which he showed me when Eileen and I visited him and his wife one evening in Anchorage in 2008, when we were on the way to open ptarmigan season with the Shoemaker family. In fact Mike inspired me to widely expand my collection of ARs, which has been very useful over the years.
