Dark thirty yesterday morning my son and I were on a public ground-high ridge waiting for the woods to come alive. Wasnβt long and a gobble boomed across the valley. I knew he was in a small creek bottom 400 yards away. We headed to the truck and I dropped him off a couple hundred yards from the Tom. I listened to him work on the Tom for several minutes. Another bird fired off a couple times in the distance. I looked at the map and got an idea of his travel route. The gravel road made a loop which was perfect to get in front of him. I parked the truck, let things settle for a few minutes and hooted. He cut me off at 150 yards. I grabbing my gun and hustled to get set up. I was easing along and a crow was flying over calling. The gobbler sounded off 100 yards away. I plopped down under a big white oak and made a few purrs and clucks. Bam, he answered. I shut up and just listened. A few minutes later he was drumming just out of sight but swinging to my left. I turned my head to the right and clucked softly a few more times. My barrel was pointed at the leaves crunching and that drumming sound. Out steps a black and brown shiny ball of feathers. That ole head was parascoped up looking for a hen but it was too lateβ¦ The #5βs were half way to his face. π My sonβs bird headed toward Oklahoma and he never heard any more gobbles around.

very cool for getting on 2 public land birds, and giving one a ride in the truck
I may not be smart but I can lift heavy objects
I have a shotgun so I have no need for a 30-06.....

Congratulations, a well earned turkey. I would be smiling too. Too bad your son couldnβt connect. Maybe next hunt, two against one. π

Nice and congrats! I agree about the hills getting steeper, why I bought some flat hunting land! Lol!

Nice bird! Any bird in Arkansas is a trophy these past few years.
