Well I got it done early opening morning. About 6 minutes, maybe! laugh
I didn’t use my 870 20ga I put together, where these birds were at I decided to go with something else.
By the time I climbed to the top of the ridge I was hunting, daylight was breaking pretty quick. I had an idea of where the birds might be roosting from last seasons pattern. So I started slipping in that direction. It was getting light enough that I knew I had to set my butt down and quite moving when I heard two birds open up on the roost about 60 or so yards in front of me… Crap!

I was right beside a big white oak so I just cleared out a spot in front of it with my foot to set down. By the time I got my headnet on the first bird pitched out of the tree and flew past me on the right before it hit the ground. That’s what I was afraid of, I was going to end up right in the middle of the bunch. Two more birds came out of the tree and luckily they went to the front of me about 40 yards out the ridge. Ended up there was about 5 or 6 of them altogether.
I heard the first bird to my right walking back towards the other two. I turned my eyes and see it was a jake but he was in a prime position to pick me off. The two long beards in front of me in the mean time were coming my way on their own. The first one turned and went in front of me at about twenty yards while the second one was still facing me. When the second bird turned to the right where the first one did and walked behind a tree, I position myself for when it came out.
I could still see the front bird in direct sight but I had to take the chance and make the move on the second bird. I guess I just got lucky and got away with it.

I never had the chance to even use my call grin. I’m thinking they might have heard me cleaning out the leaves to set down and thought it might be another bird scratching. No way to know for sure but that might be why they left the roost in my direction. I’d always rather be lucky than good! grin laugh
At any rate, it was a lot of fun.
