Found this one the other day while turkey hunting. At first glance I thought it was a chicken of the woods, but as I got closer I saw it wasn't. I don't remember ever seeing this kind before, and wonder what it is. I don't eat any mushroom but a morel anyway, but do like knowing what is what.

I don’t have any degrees in the subject, but I would guess it’s a Dryad's saddle, also known as pheasant back. Some people eat them, but I don’t like them. They have a strong cucumber smell that sounds appealing, but isn’t.

Thanks guys. As I said, I don't eat any mushrooms but morels, but there might come a day when it's either eat what you can find or starve, so I like to know what's what.

There is nothing there worth the risk of attempting to fill up on wild harvested mushrooms.

Show me they have zero value. Keeping in mind "mushrooms" cover a lot of territory.

There is not the nutritional value in mushrooms to save one from starvation in a survivalist situation.

The risks involved, especially for a novice just isn't worth any possible reward.

Gathering tubers and capturing small animals might be more worth ones efforts.

I harvest and consume a few different wild mushroom varieties myself but still wouldn't recommend it to someone foraging through the forest looking for something that would fill their belly and save them from possible starvation.

The last thing someone needs in a survival situation is to become ill from eating the wrong thing.

Remember what triggered my comment.

Once, on a track, our flora guy pointed to a mushroom/fungus and said: "See that...THAT will kill you."

Traveling 50m, further, pointing he said: "THAT will kill ten of you."

Next time you purchase white button mushrooms at the grocery store, just remember, they may be cute and bite-size but they have a relative out west that occupies some 2,384 acres (965 hectares) of soil in Oregon's Blue Mountains. Put another way, this humongous fungus would encompass 1,665 football fields, or nearly four square miles (10 square kilometers) of turf and 2000 years old.

Nutrition
Mushrooms are a rich, low calorie source of fiber, protein, and antioxidants. They may also mitigate the risk of developing serious health conditions, such as Alzheimer’s, heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

They’re also great sources of:

Selenium
Copper
Thiamin
Magnesium
Phosphorous

Continued from that link..

Long and short-term studies alike have found that mushrooms, in combination with exercise and other lifestyle changes, can have an important impact on weight loss. For example, after being asked to substitute 20 percent of their beef consumption with mushrooms, research participants showed improvements in their BMI and belly circumference.

Addtional weight loss might not be exactly what someone facing starvation should be seeking.
