Peeps,
Can those that remember or have one of the old 10x Leupold scopes remember the dimensions? Where they the same length as the 12x models, or shorter?
Cheers...

No #'s to share, but had both, and very similar......so ring spacing etc. should be similar between the 2 if that is your concern.

I must say the 12x gave me perfect zoom for what I was doing, the 10 left me wanting for a touch more, but the difference was subtle. At that time the 12 had a CPC and the 10 a duplex and that might have affected my results....on small pests at a distance.

Appreciate the quick response. Have x2 older 12x models and I dearly love them for varmints for their simplicity. Was thinking of the 10x for a 223AI or possibly even a 17Mach2.
Cheers...

OK - I couldn’t find my M8-12X but measured an M8-10X at 13” in length, an M8-8X at 12.6” and a 36X M8 at 14”. I’m pretty sure the 10X and the 12X are the same dimensions (of course I’ve been known to be wrong😁).

The late model FX3 12X scopes I have are right at 12". The earlier 10Xs, etc. are a smidgen over 13".

The early models were three piece bodies (the tubes screw into the turret area). The later models are one piece bodies. That was a big improvement for tracking and RTZ.

I always thought I would like a 12, years back. I never pulled the trigger; I was wanting to use it for a varmint rig.

17M2 in Aussi ?

Yes, has to be the most impressive rabbit cartridge I've used. Only just getting to know it, but has taken a few on our small acreage and the reach is noticeably better than the 22RF. And its quiet enough not to set the horses off.

Mostly rabbits and European hares. A friend and I shot rabbits at range with his 17M2 and my 22LR, long shots but not horizontally as the ground is STEEP!!! Projectiles were covering a good 130yards plus, but maybe only 90-100 yards horizontally. The 17M2 was easier to get hits, and a bit more emphatic. Dealt with the wind better too. It's a lovely little cartridge!!

Con: Not to steal the thread as I find it very interesting - I have owned several 10 power Leupolds in the distant past but I eventually sold them all when Leupold introduced their ground breaking and wonderful 6.5x20 variable scopes and mounted them up.
I could NOT remember the dimensions of the early 10 powers comparably to the early 12 powers - I am glad 6MMWASP showed his great photos.
AGAIN my memory is NOT what it used to be but I am rather sure that the later Leupold straight 12 power scopes were SHORTER than the early Leupold 12 powers?
Anyway I have an excellent condition (no ring marks or flaws) Leupold straight 12 power with adjustable objective, gloss finish and fine Du-Plex reticle for sale.
Cost is $275.00 buyer pays shipping.
Hope all is well down Australia way.

I have two of the old 12 powers.
One has been sitting on a 40x Rem. in 7 mag. for about 50 years.
Early on i sent it to Dick Thomas at Premier reticles for a custom multi dot reticle.
About 15 years ago i sent it to Leupold for just an elevation knob to be installed as well.
The other one had target knobs when i bought it, and it has the factory duplex reticle.
They are very clear scopes, clearer in my opinion than the variable power models, and still enough power for very long shots.

Good morning, sir. You are correct about the length. There were actually 3 generations of straight 12X Leupolds with the early ones being the longest. As the power went up, the lengths got longer on this generation of scopes.

The most common 12X's are the second 'generation' version, which had some changes as production went along. These initially had friction adjustments. Then 1/4" click-style w/e adjustments were phased in. The 'click' adjustment models could be had in standard, target turrets or an elevation-only turret commonly referred to as the 'Varmint' model...though they were never marked as such. The changeover to MC3 (Multi Coat) glass occurred during the second generation. MC3 models can be identified by the finer serrations on the A.O. compared to the pre-MC3 versions which had the 'saw tooth' style serrations. Both Gen. 1 and 2 were three piece scope tubes where the front and rear tube thread into the turret section. Later in production, they could be had in matte finish and the rarely seen silver version. I had one of the silver finished versions. A wide range of reticles were available on the second generation model. Standard DuPlex, fine DuPlex, plain cross hair, 'target' dot and the CPC which was a wide cross hair that tapered to the target dot in the center. I've had all of these in the many 12X scopes I've owned.

The final version was the FX-3. These had one piece tubes, 1/4" target adjustments, a target dot and were matte finish only. These were the most rugged of all, due to the one piece tubes.

I used various 12X's for years on fox, coyotes and 'dogs with great results. Later on, I moved to the 6.5-20's (40 and 50 mm objectives) and the 8.5-25X40.

I'm sure there are other minor details but this is the bulk of it, for what it's worth.

This is a second generation target model with a fine DuPlex on my Sako single shot 22PPC. The three piece tube is apparent.

Good shootin' smile -Al

Had a Leupold 12x Varmint on a
22-250 700VS blued fluted.
Liked the scope, but the package bounced around.

Have a shorter tube 10x w CPC, but would rather go w another Varmint model 12x ( tall.elev turret only ) on a Ruger #1 B .22-250.

VG,
I had one of those, we didnt get along. At the highest powers I found that the eye box was far too sensitive for me. Slight wiggle of the head and it'd go dark. The 12x is more forgiving, particularly when you bail out of a ute and need to quickly line up a fox over the bonnet.

As for Australia ... going to hell in a hand basket rapidly. In my State, review into gamebird hunting is under-way which is ominous. Cruelty to Animals act will be reviewed at some stage with sentience to be recognised. The whole 'lead' thing for hunting is also rearing its head. Lots of primer shortages, and some powders even locally manufactured are getting harder to source.

Anyway, back to the 10x Leupold ... locked one in to buy. Only one way to find out of I'd like it... grin
Cheers...

Forget the Reupold notion and go 10x MQ. It will do more on the etched reticle alone, than Reupold can muster in totality...plus there's 40+ Mil's of erector travel. Hint.

Thank me later..................
