chainsaw sharpening

Any one using a jig to hold the file? Some other tool to make it simple?

Now that I am retired and back in the country I am using my chainsaw a lot more and need to start doing my own sharpening..

This is what I use now... used a file for 40 years until one of my friends turned me on to this...

I have one of those Harbor Freight chainsaw sharpening tools and it works very well. Once you get it adjusted correctly according to the instructions it just takes a few minutes to get them razor sharp... I was a little surprised as it was only $29.99 on sale...

Harbor freight is better. Just not good.
Little repeatability
Stihl 2in 1
Or if you do it more.
Spend $120 for a knockoff grinder. Go to Arboristsite to tune it up.
If you grind a good bit spend about $100 for a CBN wheel. Never dress it again. Just clean. Takes 10 seconds
Sharpen all you want with good repeatability

I've always just used a file. I know I bought guide once, but I don't know where the hell I put it.

I've used round files to touch up in the field. And used the rotary tools with a grinding wheel at home. But we've had several trees fall in our neighborhood this spring and there are only 2 of us who burn wood. We've both got a 2-3 year supply of free wood in the last few weeks. My neighbor showed me one of these and I bought one. Only sharpened one chain so far, but it does better than anything else I've used.

They aren't cheap and I need 2 of them for different size chains. But I'd highly recommend.

It has 2 round files and a flat file inside the guide. I'm pretty sure I can replace the files when they are worn, but haven't looked closely enough and may be wrong.

I think the problem most guys have with these cheap units is they don't get them adjusted completely so they make repeatable teeth. I had a few minutes of not understanding how the adjustments work, but once I got it completely adjusted it whizzed through sharpening about 4 chains and they are all sharper than they have ever been... I just can't for some reason get a decent sharpening with a file . I always get one side more or less than the other and my saw cuts crooked. I've tried jigs and lots of other tools and even broke a couple but never could get it right. This cheap unit at only $29.99 is worth a try for just about anyone IMO...

Can't hardly go wrong with this one. I see the Chinese are making a cheap model of it too now.

I've used a hand held Granberg 12 vote sharpener for years. I would never go back to a file. The electric tool uses cylindrical stones and there are guide lines to duplicate the angle. Any chain saw dealer would have them. In the woods I hook to the vehicle battery for quick resharpening or use a battery pack. At home I just hook to a battery charger.

I use the round file version of this and it works well enough once you learn it. Might give the electric version a try one day when I get lazy.
