This was "cute" enough that it had to follow me home. I am a sucker for NIB old stuff I guess.

I really don't blame you for scooping that up!

I have a spot in my heart for the 325. Shot my first deer with one in northern Minnesota at the age of 11. It was very accurate.

As much as anything I would like to know the story behind it. Why was it bought new and then never used?

I got it at a very small 1/2 day "Sportsman's Swap Meet". I did seen the rifle before about a year ago and it has haunted me. The guy brought it along thinking I may show up. The things a guy does for entertainment!

If the price was right, I'd have grabbed that in a heartbeat. Love NIB stuff! What's the date code on it?

I might be tempted by that, although with the scope mounting boondoggle it'd have to be as a collector and not a shooter.

Honestly, I never even looked. When I got home I wiped it down, put it in the box and stuffed it in the back of the safe. My book shows that these were made 1947-1950. This one is not factory drilled for the side scope mount so I assume it is an earlier one but it honestly didn't matter. I have a couple of NIB Savage model 101 22 pistols to keep it company.

Oh, that's right.. the 340 came out in 1950. So it'll only have a date code if it was made in 1949.

You are just a wealth of knowledge. Thank you! Now I have to dig it back out just to look and see.

Aren’t many bolt guns in this world chambered in 30-30. I have one in a Model 54 Winchester.

I'm not familiar with the "boondoggle", but years ago Gun Parts sold a simple sheet metal scope mount for the 340. A buddy of mine bought one and stuck it on a 340 in 30-30 with a Weaver K4 and seemed to think it worked fine. I haven't looked recently to see if GP still has that mount available. If not, I'd stick on a peep sight and go shoot something.

If I am not mistaken the 340's were factory drilled and tapped for the Weaver side mount but the 325's were not.

The early 340s were not factory drilled and tapped.

To me, this seems like a clear case of beauty being in the eye of the beholder, but if you're happy with it that's all that counts, right?

Cute are the kid bolt guns Savage used to make. Like a chipmunk, but not.
That's just good, simple, nice.

1947 or 48 I believe. The box is nasty with old dust but does have the shipping label on it to the original buyer. It was shipped to a small-town train station about 75 miles from here in Osky's back yard.
