In 1953 Mom and Dad gave me a new Mossburgh .22 for my 14th birthday. Took it out today and mused over the fond memories I have with it. Made me grin when I recalled the days when we here on the 24CF wrapped a layer of blue tape around the barrel of our guns. For levity's sake, I did the same. Hoping there would be no rust beneath I removed the tape. That.22 has been with me for 70 years now. Thousands upon thousands of rounds down the barrel. Mouse to whitetail have been harvested with it. It still takes starlings at 50+ yards. It needs no colored tape to enhance its value. One of my very few material treasures.

We really didn't know why. Does one need a reason? Once around an inch wide was the normal but 2 side by side made an exceptional rifle. We really didn't know why but we did. You would be flamed and shamed if you posted a picture of your gun with no blue tape.

Sure we know. It has everything to do with a deer's special ability to see the color blue, therefore making blue jeans a bad choice for hunting attire. Or so said a wise man, from Oregon...

The blue tape made them shoot better! It also made them more socially acceptable among those in the know here. It was a well known fact that a gun with a wrap or two of blue tape just took more game and the owner could say "yep" without an accent.

I guarantee that the fury over blue tape was responsible for the sudden spike in blue tape stock. I know that I decided to give the wild game that I hunt a sporting chance by changing from black electrical tape on my muzzle to blue electrical tape. 😀

To the OP…good thread. 👍🏼

I still have and cherish my Glenfield 22 bolt action rifle that my parents bought me for Christmas 1979. It is priceless…

Ah , for the record most blue tape is painters masking tape with adhesive qualities little better than enough to get the job done. In the case of a muzzle accessory it worked till you got home where you replaced for the next day. You know I wouldn't shid you..mb

There's someone here that even tapes his scopes. From memory, I think he goes with orange or red.

I went really radical and stretched a blue balloon over my braked 30-378 muzzle. Accuracy is truly remarkable now.

Is it true that there were no grizzly attacks on men carrying a gun with a wrap of blue tape?

I leave the forum for a while and WTF?

No more blue tape?

Next, you'll all be telling me that I shouldn't eat a can of frozen OJ and shave my junk?

Is there a different cure for Baboon Azz now?

Damn, I have a lot of catching up to do...

Removing the blue tape? That seems like a huge risk. Not sure I’d want to take such a big step.

Chronographs, bore scopes and pattern boards have broke a lot of hearts.
