I was able to get my hands on a lb of h4831sc and found an ok starting point. Used 59 grains with a few different seating depths. One of them gave me a sub moa group. Loaded a few with big game rounds just to see velocity and got up to 3000fps with 130sp. I will try big game again with the seating depth that worked with the 4831.

Sounds like you're on track, you might try 4350 or RL 19 also. I wouldn't shy away from 4831 at all.

Nothing wrong with it, but I always felt that 4350 was the jack of all trades and master of none. I should probably revisit it.

IMR 4831 improved the accuracy of 2 of my 270's when I switched from IMR4350. The 3rd shows no difference. Both work Sometimes one works better than the other. I also have stayed with Hornady 130 grn spt flat base interlocks. All 3 of my 270,s like those more than any other brand/weight or powder. Good luck

JOC liked 4831 w/130 grain bullets. When I get to my computer I’ll try to remember loads that worked for me. Did you look at Gun Gack? I’ve found that Nosler’s most accurate loads are often very good loads too.
I prefer classic. Semper Fi I used to run with the hare. Now I'm envious of the tortoise and I do my own stunts but rarely intentionally

Can’t go wrong with IMR-4064, H4350, or H4831SC. That bullet is a winner in 270 Win.

H4831 is good and accurate in every 270 I have had. Re19 will surprise you with the 130s. Fast.

Hornady's max load of H 4831 with that bullet is 62 grains for around 3100 fps in a 24" barrel. You've got room to go up if you want.

My primers were starting to crater a bit but no other pressure signs that I could tell of. I’m new to reloading in general so I try and play it safe. I did see that hornady has 62 grains listed as max also. My nosler book had 59 listed so I went with the lower charge. I appreciate all the info. These were my first tests with this calibre and bullet. I will be testing it a lot more and I’ll report my findings. Cheers

Ah, I see. I assumed it was a modern bolt rifle. I don't know much about the 7400s or what kind of pressures they can handle so I can't help any there. Sounds like you've got a pretty good handle on it, however. Never hurts to use caution. Enjoy the testing.

My experience is H4831 and 130gr bullets in a 270 is one of those rare perfect combinations. 61g drives 130 Hornady Spire Points 3100fps in my 22” Tikka. Interestingly, the Nosler recommended COAL was spot on for me. Shorter or longer opened up groups. Partitions and the same charge opened groups up to MOA. In my experience, the Hornady bullets are perfectly designed for this velocity window and the cost/accuracy has made it hard to justify shooting more expensive and harder to find Partitions, even on 300-500lb pound animals.

I’ve got a 270 7400, and learned the hard way to not shoot slow burning powders. In fact anything over 58 gr of H4831SC caused major timing / cycling issues, even though it was well below max and slow. You may have the same issue with Hunter. I beat up the gun and case rims not knowing the issue at first.
I suggest you stay with H4350 or faster. IMR-4064 is another great choice. Leave the H4831SC for the bolt guns.
Also my 7400 doesn’t like exposed lead tip bullets, as they get hung up on the feed throat. If may just be my gun, but make sure when you’re doing load development you feed from the mag also to verify. Rather than having the gun modified, I switched to ballistic tips / SSTs and don’t have a problem any more. That gun spends most of the time in the safe anyway after I bought my BAR in 270 Win.
And your primers weren’t cratering because of pressure. The firing pin hole on that bolt is just big vs the pin. Known Remington issue.
Once you find a load that shoots good, shoot 3 shots and make sure all the brass lands about 4 o’clock, about 5 ft from the gun, and most importantly all 3 empty cases are within 1.5 ft of one another. If it’s throwing them randomly, consider backing off the load. The 7400 is not one you want to hot rod. Be happy with about 2900 fps with 130s.
Also keep your chamber clean and dry (no lube or oil). This includes making sure you clean the lube off your cases before firing. This is one of the reasons why Remington semis earned the nickname jam-o-matic.
Also that gun is very finicky with respect to vertical stringing based on the front barrel/action bolt torque. If it starts to string, locktite it and torque it to mfg specs. Mine would shift 10” or more at 100 yds until I figured this out.

I agree. It’s what I’ve used in my .270 for a long time. I’ve had the rifle since 1991 and it’s on its second barrel. It’s a Browning A Bolt Stainless Stalker with a boss and 18" barrel. I got better and better at shooting since then and got much better loading equipment and shooting accessories to check the loads. H 4831 is one of the best performers ever for the 130 grain. It has the best accuracy and most consistent speeds of just about any cartridges I load for. That said, I’m interested in the Ramshot Big Game since it looks like it will work in four or five cartridges I have. I have been watching the talk of this powder for a while and I may try a pound of it sometime in the future, but it’s hard to do it since I found that load with 4831 that’s just about perfect and something a smart person should never deviate from.

I did a lot of research last night on reloading for the 7400 and everything you’ve mentioned is what I’ve come to discover. Looking at the burn chart I also think 4064 would probably be my best bet. I do have big game on hand which is faster burning than h4350. I’ve had this gun for over 20yrs and have never had issues with feeding yet so that’s a plus. I have experienced a few jams from using oil when cleaning. Something I’ve corrected and haven’t had issues with since. I will load a few lighter loads with big game and test tomorrow to see if my brass lands at 4 and within 1.5’. This is something I wasn’t paying attention to last test. Cheers.

Well I went back out today and tested 15 rounds with 4064 and 15 with varget. I did 5 strings of 3 shots in 0.5 increments and shot them over my chrono to get velocities on each and to see if they would eject properly. The 4064 definitely won the brass ejection category but I’d be ok with what the varget did as well. Both were drastically better than my tests with 4831sc, h4350 and big game. Used the hornady app to work up my loads to suggest max and the 4064 was a shade quicker at every level. Mid to max book. My best group came with 4064 but varget grouped better in general and had better es/sd on average. All shots were taken at 100yrs. I’ll try and post some pics but im not great at that part yet. Hope this helps anyone else loading for a 270 semi. [img] [/img]

Big game is not for the 270. I use hunter and 140 SST at 3050 fps .I could go little faster, but this is better accuracy at the range. It’s flat shooting MOA SOB For elk I load up 130 ttsx around 3150fps.

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.
