I saw and fired a S&W Mod 59 today that operated DAO. I am no expert but I have not encountered one before. Research was inconclusive. Factory, personally or armorer conversion or broken?
Did not dissamble it which might have given me a clue.

I don't know. I ran across a GB auction yesterday for a S&W 15-2 that was advertised as DAO also. I've heard of PD's requirements for it, but I think they just bobbed the hammers. When the bid crossed the $450 mark, I lost interest.

Why bother with old clunker for which parts are no longer available? Do you intend to use this or just post pics on the net? What will this do that SiG P226 will not do better?

Probably factory. As tc1 stated, several police departments mandated a [bleep] trigger for their service pistols in the name of safety.

Not fire unless someone pulls the trigger?
What parts aren’t available for a Smith and Wesson pistol?

I don't recall ever hearing anything definitive about factory DAO on first gen Smith autos, so I would assume after the fact or broken.

Slavek,
I normally don't address forum answers that aren't germain to the question asked, but your response pushed my button. I asked a technical question for some information on a specific situation in which I was involved. Your answer did not address the question at all and blatently showed your attempt to impress this forum with your ability to type on a small keyboard. What you did ignorantly but effectively demonstrated your inability to comprehend simple English, lack of knowledge of current component availability, enter into a pissin' match or you are a SIG salesman. Anyway, I like these forums for usable information. If I want BS, I will go to the local stock yard. Thanks for your interest.

Sorry i did not write this earlier. The DAO S&W Model 59 does not exist because it is not mentioned in Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson.

I'm not aware of any factory DAO's in the 59. The DAO's didn't show up until the 3rd gen guns, so that's two gen's earlier. Of course some agency could have ordered a few that way, or someone could have done a conversion. Would be interesting to see how they did it.

Collectors say that anything is possible with Smith, so it could have been any of the three. I'd go with someone dropping in parts from a later model that resulted in DAO function.

For an original Model 59, almost all of them. They've been out of production for forty years.

There are still a lot of parts available for 59's, they made a ton of them. They were pretty robust pistols, so not much breaks. I just never cared for the ergonomics. But they were decent pistols.

During the early years of IPSC- 59s and Hi-powers were converted to 9 major with barrel replacements. Don Fisher gunsmith comes to mind. (but that was 40 years ago.) Obvious advantage of increased magazine capacity. 160 gr cast bullets were used and barrels with faster twist rates. Major power factor of 176
