Getting ready to take my rifle parts for a .280 AI to my smith. I’m still undecided if I’ll go .280 AI SAAMI or old school .280 AI.
I’ll be hand loading. Does one have any major benefits over the other? Can the .280 AI SAAMI be fired in the old school .280 AI or vice versa?

Brass is brass and headspace control should be a given. Hint.
What isn't cited,is magbox COAL and twist rate. I want a 700 'box and 8" RPM on a Custom, with a 180 ELD Smooch at 3.580" COAL. That leaves room to chase the throat and slide 190 Beer Cans and their .838 BC into the fray. Hint.
Just sayin'............

I went old school Ackley because the SAAMI version was not around at the time. Built it on a Springfield 03 action, Douglas barrel 23" long. I should shoot it more but when the new was gone went back to shooting my 7x57 most of the time.

My recently acquired factory Ruger #1 280 AI is being fed with these. A bargain IMO. https://www.midwayusa.com/product/101244296?pid=196260

If it was me I'd go SAAMI, if only because Grp. A dies are cheaper & more available than Grp. D dies & no dicking around with odd shellholders. It will also be the standard going forward. If you haven't seen it, this may help. https://redding-reloading.com/tech-line-a-tips-faqs/133-280-changes

I went with the SAAMI when I had mine chambered.
I prefer classic. Semper Fi I used to run with the hare. Now I'm envious of the tortoise and I do my own stunts but rarely intentionally

I have thought about going with a 280 AI. I would go with the SAAMI.

I have two 280 AI’s, both cobbled by Kampfeld. He uses what he calls a “tweener” chamber reamer. It splits the difference “tween” the two versions. I have had zero issue with either one.
Fire-formed or Nosler commercial brass runs quite well. The dies are certainly different, obviously.
By the way, in case you missed it, Jeremiah was a bullfrog.

Can the .280 AI SAAMI be fired in the old school .280 AI or vice versa? Like a .38 special in a .357 magnum.

Redding rep sent me the right set of dies for free. I use the Type S Match Bushing Dies. I can get the stock number tomorrow.
