,..on a 1952 8N tractor.

Went out to do some work with it today and it was stone dead. No electricity to nothing. Tried everything that came to mind.

After eliminating many things, I just decided to concentrate on the battery and battery cables.

The guy who restored this old tractor put a dandy, automotive type paint job on it,...layed it up thick and shiny. I took the ground cable off, scraped the paint off where the cable bolted against the body, put it back on and it fired right up.

Put me in a schitty mood for a few hours. Now I'm back in a good mood.

No. It's the original 6 volt system. I think it's had a problem with the ground all along. Because today after I scraped the paint off where it grounded, it fired right up cold. I usually had to spin it over a few times cold to get it to fire.

I helped a guy get an antique starter going for a 51 Chevy truck after he did a "restoration" on it by powder coating everything before assembling it. It wouldn't run at all until I scraped the powder coating off so the current could flow to ground. He was a little red faced over that!

Yeah, I'd guess that powder coating is a good insulator.

When it occurred to me to check the ground, I took a jumper cable, clipped one end to the battery and the other end to a bare spot on the axel and the lights would come on. That's when I knew it wasn't grounding.

8Ns have very simple wiring to the headlights. It's just a simple switch straight from the battery to the lights. There can be all kinds of bad connections on it and the lights will still come on.

That's what tipped me off that nothing was coming from the battery,...and I knew that the battery was good.

It appears to be a very thin line between the 2 ^^^

Caution on calling the cable between the battery and chassis "ground" on a six volt system as most are POSITIVE ground.

The first thing I did when I bought my two old cars was check every ground for bare metal contact and I also added a few additional grounds.

I've been fighting the urge to sell the 8N, pinch off a piece of my IRA and buy one of these. But I guess not now.
