This may be a dumb question BUT is there a safe and effective way to plug the ported barrel on a Marlin 45-70 Guide Rifle? Any help is greatly appreciated!!

I have a ported 444 and like it as is. If you really want to get rid of the ports, the best and safest way would be to cut your barrel back.

Call Marlin and ask them the cost of replacing the barrel with a non ported one. When I called a few years ago for the same thing (noisy beast) they quoted me $125.

Thanks for the suggestion about a new barrel. For $125 I couldn't go wrong with that. I fired that "beast" only once without hearing protection. That won't happen again!!!! It actually took about two years for the ringing to stop. There's no deer worth that!! Thanks for any future suggestions.

Thanks for the suggestion about a new barrel. For $125 I couldn't go wrong with that. Unless the result would be exceptionally short, IMHO you're better off lopping off the ports and doing a recrown.. Average cost is about $40.. I fired that "beast" only once without hearing protection. OUCH! That won't happen again!!!! It actually took about two years for the ringing to stop. I'm betting that's no exageration.. There's no deer worth that!! I hear ya.. (pun intended)

The guide gun is already pretty short. Cutting it back more...well you might as well use a Contender in .45-70 then!

Buy a good set of electronic ear muffs and leave barrel alone.

Have a 'smith put a sleeve over the ports and reinstall the sight..if done properly you won't know it's there..might be kind of hard to clean though....
