Lever action .30-30, Winchester or early Marlin. This would be my pick. Of course, I have a Winchester M94 (post '64), and it's been the death of many deer, and a few pigs and bears. I'll third that. No gun feels as good to my hands as the aged steel and walnut of a good lever action rifle. I've always been a Winchester guy, but a couple of years ago I lucked into a straight grip '55 Marlin 336 in 35 Remington. It runs slick and shoots great.
