I am working on my first full custom rifle. Started life as stainless classic 7 mag. I had hill country out on a bartlein 2b stainless barrel chambered in 300 win mag. Barrel is 24”, threaded and included a break and a cap. I have a spare set of S&k mounts and a Swarovski Z5 to put on it.

I ordered bansner Miller stock for the model 70 which I received. Working on adding the pad and adjusting the final fit including bedding.

Stock is in the rough with no paint action has been bead blasted so it all matches. Thinking I will put this together and see how it shoots before I decide on the finishes of metal and stock mainly because I am impatient.

Question is I have been looking at suppressor options for this rifle. I was looking at the AB raptor series either in the 6 or 8 baffle. Wondering if anyone has any experience with these in bolt guns and how they work. I have surefire 300 sps already in hand that will work but is heavier and proprietary mounting issues. I was considering going to 22” barrel but it probably won’t be dedicated suppressor gun so would hate to limit its versatility without the suppressor.

Sounds like you're asking about suppressors and not custom model 70s. Maybe retitle the thread for more responses.

Or post it in a different forum?? Gunsmithing, or AR and tactical rifle sections??

What do you want the gun to do? I have gone more specific with my suppressors. I think I have 6 now. Each has a specific use. Not a 300 mag fan though. Not needed with modern bullets out there.

I can’t imagine you would end up with a 300 win mag with less than a 30” barrel with a suppressor installed. If you went with an over-barrel suppressor you may trim a few inches but your Z5 is a 1” tube scope so would have to mount it higher in rings on a rail otherwise I am guessing you would see a large diameter suppressor in your FOV.

Nothing wrong with a long suppressor barrel rifle, but only you know what and how you will be using it. I know it’s not for me.

Rifle was built really to use without a suppressor but I am intrigued about using a suppressor on a bolt rifle. It is threaded for the option and wanted to experiment a little with this one and would most likely build a shorter barrel bolt rifle in the long run which would be more dedicated to run with a suppressor.

Just looking for anyone s experiences with a suppressor on a bolt gun.

I think many of us have experience with suppressors on bolt guns.
My experience is with short action cartridges with barrels no longer than 21”. Most are less than 20”.
I did have a 24” 260 but rarely suppressed it as overall length became a PITA.

I will no longer hunt without my bolt guns being suppressed. If I get a barrel that is not threaded, I have it cut to 20’’ and threaded.
Whether I’m hunting or just shooting, I want my rifle to be suppressed.
Try it. I think you’ll love it.

My experience suppressing various 300 magnums is that the typical shorty 5" suppressor knocks the blast and recoil down a bit but for best results a 7" suppressor is better.

Unless it's a dedicated LR rig, 24" is too long. The best overlap between portability and how nice the gun is to shoot will be with a 20" barrel and 7" suppressor of brand XYZ. You can also run the barrel at 22" with a 5" can, but you're not really getting all the recoil reduction benefits etc.

308 based cartridges really don't need much more than a 5" suppressor, though a 7" makes them really quiet. Ditto with 30-06 based cartridges. But when you get into the high-60's/low 70's for powder charges a 7" can is nice.

I am looking at the AB because they have a 6.3” can that is only 8 oz and can take up to 375 with different end caps. Also has an over the barrel piece which is included but optional when installed to increase the blast chamber. Thinking I would try it on the 24” and if I like it may cut the barrel down to maybe as low as 21”.

'Tis a BIG hit, going backwards to 300 Winny, especially on a 70 and a Swaro adds piss to the punch. SK's are no prize either. Hint..............

Thanks for the info. I still have another non magnum to build which could either be a long or short action model 70. What calibers are y’all suppressing and have you seen any work better supressed than others??

I use a Dead Air Nomad30 titanium on a .260 Rem and a 6.5CM. The .260 started with a 24" barrel. It's at the gunsmith now to get shortened to 20". The 6.5CM is 22" and not worth shortening to 20". Both are direct thread for additional weight/length savings.

The .260 is my dedicated deer rifle. The 6.5CM has a thermal and is my dedicated night hunting rig. Both sound like a 22mag or less.

Whatever you get, consider titanium for the weight. DeadAir recently came out with a Nomad 30 long titanium suppressor. You might look at that too.

I hear really good things about the Dead Air can.

If you are not actively engaging EVERY enemy you encounter... you are allowing another to fight for you... and that is cowardice... plain and simple.
