Feedback. Audible (“tink”) and visual (target falls or swings) appeals to kids and adults alike. Swinging metal silhouettes do both and don’t require resetting. Used to be available at Walmart, but now all I see are self-healing (no “tink”). If it is made of metal the dueling tree mentioned above would work the same.

Also you might eventually consider an M&P 15-22. You can teach the use of peep, red dot, and scope sighting systems on the same rifle. (And everyone needs to learn how to use the AR platform.)

Get a steel target - Jack started at 10, now 14 still loves hearing the hit! Don’t shoot many groups any more, but ringing that dong way out there is more than worth the trade off.

My kids shoot those little green army man toys with a red ryder. When no one is home, I do it too.

Charcoal briquettes are a challenge and they disappear when well hit.

Hot glue a string to them and hang them from a 2x4. Same game with old shot shells on a string.

Cheap oatmeal cookies stood in a groove routed out of a 2x4, you lose points if you hit the board...

Fill soda can with water and shoot with Stingers.
Small plastic bottles with tight caps filled with water also explode with Stingers.
Balloons on the ground at different distances.
Clay pigeons.
Dueling tree.
Golf ball on the ground.
