The last two years I have paid $60 each year with my propane company to lock in a set price per gallon. This obviously is to negate any market fluctuations in propane prices. Two years ago I made out by saving over $250 by taking that option. Last year didn’t make a difference and they got my $60.

Do any of you take this option and how has it worked out for you?

I personally never did but I know of people that have. My brother in Central Florida has it delivered and has done that.

I have them fill up in the spring or early summer.

One company sent me a customer appreciation deal a few weeks ago, $1.79 gal. 150 gal min buy.

It don't get that cold here and we have a big enough tank to go through the winter so I never take them up on the lock in price.

That's what I do. I just received an email from AmeriGas for $1.84 per gallon. My tank is 325 gal. But most of the time I do need another 100 gallons mid winter at the higher prices to get me through but still calling around and getting the best price is the best method imo. There is normally a hugh variance in prices during winter months.

Yes, we`ve done it for several years...no charge to sign early. In fact it should be coming up here in June.

We use 3 #100 tanks[24gl per], used 2.5 tanks last winter.
Calling this week to have them refilled.
If it is at or under $2gl I guess we did okay.

This.

We'll generally contract 1000 gal for the winter in late July - mid August. Have to take everything contracted by 4/30 the following spring.

I've never used that option. Have a 500 gal. tank and fill it once a year, usually end of Aug. or early Sept. when the price is the lowest.

We don’t lock in. We do a summer fill in August. Always the cheapest time.

I've taken that option with my propane company too. It's a bit of a gamble, but it paid off for me two years ago. Last year was a wash, but hey, that's how it goes sometimes. Overall, it's worth considering if you want to avoid market price fluctuations. See how it goes for you this year

Our company runs a "Summer Special" sale in late August and I top my 500 gal. tank then.

We lock our price in every June. Pay in full at that time for the year. Our propane company doesn't charge a fee to do that. It has worked out quite well for us most of the time. Don't think we've ever been burned by doing it that way.

We lock in, and our company doesn't charge a fee to do so.

I don't have any in ground large tanks, I think the one on the house is a 150. I do however have multiple smaller tanks for my side work that they'll fill. I think locking in has saved me money thus far.

Before retiring, I was in the petroleum business for 35 years and LP was a big part of it. I have never heard of having to pay for the privilege of locking price and gallons.

We have contracted before and paid some percentage of the total up front, but have never had to pay a few to lock in a price. Maybe if you don’t pay it in advance, or at least part of it, that’s what your opinion is.

That was with a 500 gallon tank. Bought a 1000 gallon tank a few years back and have it filled in August. Pay for it all then and worry about it next August.

I would have a hard time paying a fee to get a lower price. Seems kinda counterproductive.
