I found a pre safety Marlin 1895 in 444 Marlin with the original Marlin waffle recoil pad. Its in very good shape with some honest handling marks on the wood stock. I am told this rifle was made in the 1970's. The rifle and muzzle has no bluing loss and there is no rust anywhere that I can see.

They have told me they would take $900 cash.

What do you guys think?

Tracy

Buy it. Granted. I have bought them for under $400 years ago, but the days of cheap pre-safety Marlins are gone.

Saw one at my LGS about 2 years ago priced at $450. Went back the next day with my checkbook, but it was gone. Buy it!

the 444 is not a 45-70 and never will be

I've had both.....of course the 45-70 has the edge

My 444 Outfitter ran Hornady 265 gr Interlock FP's which are now extinct

$900 is a good price.......buy now.......or cry later

But remember the original owner only paid $299 ish back then.....(:

In the mid 70s, a new well equipped pickup, didn't cost $65,000 as it does today. To the OP, if you like it and are comfortable with the price, buy it.

There is no such thing as an 1895 Marlin in 444 caliber. Read what is printed on the barrel and it will most likely read Model 444 and further down the barrel say 444 caliber. This model came first then the model 1895 was re-introduced in 45-70. As far as the claim a 45-70 is superior that is just that person belief. The Marlin 444 is a far stronger gun then the Marlin 45-70. Its weak point is the boss between the barrel and magazine. Some guns have cracked at that boss when fed a diet of heavy bullets at high velocity. That never happened with a 444.

The 444 Marlin is a great rifle and $900 is a fair price based on your description of condition. I had nine at one time but have since given one to my oldest son and one to each of a couple friends that built my new home (they did a great job.). I sold one. The rifle I sold would have easily brought over $1200 but I sold it to a young guy who really wanted a 444 at a bargain price of $1000. I still have five 444 Marlins but I am holding on to them.

You don't come across them for sale very often. If I were you, I would buy it.

Does it have the montecarlo cheek on the stock?

They are limited In number.

Perhaps more valuable.

Your right about it being the Model 444, I have for years referred to it as the 1895 Marlin in 444 caliber and I have never been corrected till now. I guess others have been making the same mistake.

If you’re wanting a Marlin 444 made before that stupid safety was stuck on them, now is the time.
