They're doing what Allstate did earlier. The bureaucracy and red tape are too costly. One more business telling them to kiss off.

They tried that in Fla. after Andrew. The insurance commissioner told them, "write it all or don't write any".

Hey, it's as good of an excuse to raise rates as anything else they could come up with! I just wish I could use it to not pay my bills.

Most things are BS, but insurance companies really try to calculate risk, actuaries.

The state requires insurance companies to base rates on history. Insurance companies want to base rates on perceived future risk. If they perceive future risk exceeds what past losses were, it makes sense to exit the market.

My understanding is they are not issuing “New” policies, but existing one will remain.

I read that when Paradise, CA burned down a couple years ago, their environmental laws prohibited homeowners from clearing brush around their houses. Dry brush was almost touching the houses so when it burned, the houses were engulfed in it. That makes for very high risk for insurance companies.

So fire don't cause massive losses? What, consider tornados and flooding?

Not true whatsoever. California fire code requirements are pretty strict and if complied to the letter make properties ugly. Enforcement is another thing. In the past, different agencies placed different priorities on brush abatement. There are plenty of weirdos out there that just feel like they gotta have their nature and don't want no gummint trying to tell them how to live. Even the harsh brush clearances aren't always enough to stop embers coming down almost like a blizzard from huge fires burning 100' away.

Environmental litigation prevented utilities from maintaining and removing brush and hazard trees in utility ROWs. High winds, contact with conductors and what do you expect?

You have a link to a reliable source for that?

I do not. Read it a few years ago in a fire trade journal. About the same time that some transmission lines were de energized periodically due to high winds

Who can blame 'em? IIRC, didn't they also abandon FL?

I would just love to see the regulations they were litigating.

Knowing how some groups abhor cutting any tree, I can almost see it happening.

I also know that Pacific Gas & Electric paid some pretty heavy compensation for not maintaining their lines, and knowing that is a very profit driven company I have no doubt some of that non-maintenance was due to cost saving.

I wonder if they were one of the utilities being sued to prevent their keeping ROWs clear?
