All three good guns. Choose the one with the features you deem important. If you have no way to try them before buying, accept that you may have to sell what doesn't work for you.
There's really no way for anyone to legitimately tell you which to choose over the internet. I agree with you on fit and feel. My main concern is reliability. I already have an opinion on what I like. Well as a long-time Glockster, I actually like the M&P40c 2.0 better than the G23 because of the trigger. It is every bit as reliable as the Glock. But.. - S&W doesn't list it anymore
- M&Ps only ship with 2 magazines
- M&Ps have those stupid combat 3 dot sights which can be a learning curve for some.
So get a gen 5 G23 S&W does have .40 M&P's with 3.6", 4", 4.25" and 5" barrels in Compact and Full size. That isn't including the Shield Plus offerings with barrel lengths from 3.1" - 4". It is strange to call steel combat sights stupid when the Glock you recommended come with plastic slot fillers. There are lots of good options, Glock is one but Glock isn't special nowadays and doesn't bring anything extra that any of the other striker fired guns from reputable gun makers doesn't also offer. You need to actually look at the S&W website so that you know what is available to the public. Btw "shield" is synonymous with "shlt" - not M&P. The shield is a product for metrosexual man-boys. S&W list 33 pistols chambered for .40 caliber... https://www.smith-wesson.com/products/pistols?caliber=40+S%26W

I only own one handgun in 40 S&W. It’s a full size HK USP. Hasbeen

I have carried the M&P40 2.0 on duty and it is a fine pistol. It shoots softer than the Glock 22 IMO. It was designed from the ground up to be a 40.
One thing to think about, like NATO spec 9mm, 40 S&W is basically +P based on SAAMI spec. Adding more pressure may require you to replace springs sooner and may degrade longevity. Not sure how much you intend to shoot it.

One more thing, you can use first gen grip mods or those stick on grips if you are worried about the 2.0 texture. You can also knock it down a bit with fine sandpaper.

The same store also has Glock 22 Gen 4s for sale at $319.
That is a solid deal as well. That's kinda tough to pass up.... ...so I won't!

I recently ordered some of Mackay's +p 40 ammo, but I have nothing to shoot it in. The purpose of this pistol is to ride around on my backpack during backcountry hunts, mostly for bear. There's been a couple times where I've had to dive deep into the brush to recover a black bear. I also want to be able to shoot a bear out to 50 yards if the opportunity arrives. This pistol will be neglected for up to 7 days without cleaning, oiling, ect.
I'm certain 90% of the replies will be Glock, but I thought I'd see if the other options are viable, M&P, XDm and so forth. If you are planning to run non-std. +P ammo? Skip the Glocks. Find a heavy frame, like the Beretta 96 Brigadier. GR

I have been shooting a 92 in IDPA for some time. They are a solid platform. If I wanted a .40 for your intended use I would seriously consider a 96.

I plan on reserving the +P ammo for actual hunts. The rest of the time I'll shoot standard reloads.
I will check out the 96, if there's one available.
I've yet to see a police trade in with 10 round magazine, but if I do, it will be a contender.

Check the Beretta 96 before you shoot too hot of a load. I don't think the chamber is fully supported.

The sellers of police trade ins will transfer the gun with no mag, or may be able to substitute a 10 rounder.

I would invest extra to get pistol with slide cut for optic instead of getting old surplus clunker.

Love mine (especially after I put the medium backstrap on it). Great deal on an essentially new Gen 4 G22, in my case.

Check the Beretta 96 before you shoot too hot of a load. I don't think the chamber is fully supported. I had a 96 Centurion (traded it for a quarter horse foal) in the mid 90s and it was a lot kinder to brass than Glocks from that era. I was scarfing brass from the indoor range where we qualified.

We have a guy in the club with 2 Jericho (IMI Baby eagles) (cz75) one in 40 and one in 9mm. Heavy but they shoot great.

I had the Italian version of that gun in 9mm for about twenty years (Tanfoglio TZ-75). Sold it last year. Heavy, due to being all steel, and solidly constructed, but that means 9mm is a complete pussycat. Practically no recoil, so you can just blast away, and keep them all in a small group.

i love Sigs, but for my needs the 226 gets the nod over the 229, that damned stubby grip...no matter how i adjust my grip i always end up riding the slide release
